Hi Joy and others researching Castles in Kent,
Just found your message of 26 Aug 05 regarding your database of 3000 Kent Castles and wonder if my gggrandfather might be among them. My message is posted on this site dated 29 Jul 05 which outlined what I know about John Edward Castle, b. circa 1839, Kent, arriving in the U.S. before 1874 (Iowa, marrying there, 6 kids, then moving to Washington State 1890).
My primary candidate is John Edward Castle, bp 8 Sep 1839, Halling, Kent. Father listed as Thomas Castle, pub owner, and mother listed as Mary. Family was still living in Halling for 1851 UK census, Thomas, age 46, b. Sandwich, Kent; wife Sarah, age 44, b. Rochester, Kent; son John age 11, b. Halling; dau Isabella, age 9, b. Halling; and Alice, age 6, b. Halling.
From church records, believe the father Thomas Castle is the Thomas Castle bp Oct 15, 1805 in St. Clement's, Sandwich, Kent, the 4th of 5 children of William Castle and Elizabeth Holmes. This Thomas Castle married Mary Johnson 3 Sep 1832 in East Farleigh, Kent, and had their first son Thomas Castle bp. 25 Dec 1833 in Halling. Mary was buried 16 Oct 1839 in Halling. Thomas the father died before the 1861 UK census, and his second wife Sarah was listed with dau Alice as an inn keeper at Snodland, Kent (village adjacent to Halling).
My problem is that I have no definite record of MY John Edward Castle in England. The last record I have of the John Edward Castle in Halling is the 1851 UK census. Do you have this John Castle in your data base with any location info on him after 1851? (proving or disproving my assumption?!!)
Thanks, Wayne Olsen
