RITES ON WEDNESDAY
Funeral Services Will Be Conducted From Home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith
Emerson W. Casterline, 81, widely known native of Hartford City, died at 2 o'clock
Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Smith, 514 west Kickapoo street,
following a long illness.
Mr. Casterline has suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on April 26, 1936, and had been
practically an invalid since that time. Five weeks ago his condition became critical and
he had been bedfast since that time.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Smith home in west Kickapoo street at 3:30
o'clock Wednesday afternoon, with burial following in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. The body
was removed to the Baxter and Markin mortuary for burial preparation and was returned to
the Smith home Monday afternoon.
Born August 18, 1858, in a log cabin at the present site of the old Geiger home in north
Walnut street, Emerson W. Casterline was the son of Ira and Charlotte (Dupler) Casterline.
When he was three years old, the family moved to a farm north of Hartford City and he
subsequently attended the Bailey School. Later he taught three terms at the same school
and for a short time engaged in farming. Then, Mr. Casterline became a section foreman
with the Pennsylvania railroad for a number of years and later worked at the old Hubbard
spoke factory here.
Mr. Casterline's longest term of employment was spent with the Indiana Railroad. For
twenty-eight years he served as a section foreman for this company, beginning his duties
in the 1903 and retiring in 1931. Since that time he led a retired life in this city.
Since that time he had led a retired life.
His marriage to Emma Mills, also a native of this county, took place on August 12, 1882.
She survives and lives in the home of the daughter, Mrs. Smith.
Surviving besides the wife, are the daughter, Mrs. Smith; a grandson Perry C. Smith, of
this city; three brothers, Arthur L. Casterline, north of Hartford City, Marvel L.
Casterline, Fort Wayne and Frank Casterline, west Water street, and one sister, Mrs.
Samuel Herbaugh, north of Hartford City. Mr. Casterline was the oldest of a family of
eight.
The decedent was a member of the Hartford City fire department for approximately thirty
years. He took an active interest in democratic politics, read extensively and took an
interest in discussing current events.

Emerson Casterline, when living was a veritable encyclopedia of Blackford County history.
He was born August 18, 1858 in a log house on the site of the Wirth Gadbury home on north
Walnut street. He was married to Emma Mills and they are survived by one daughter Mrs.
Frank Smith of west Kickapoo street. Mr. Casterline died March 25, 1940 and his wife seven
months later, November 2, 1940. When about two years of age his parents moved to the John
Casterline farm and lived in a house located on what is now the Mrs. David Townsend farm.
