A Shocking Accident to a Well-Known Citizen of Owego and a Faithful Employee of the Erie

A shocking accident occurred near Sawyer's crossing, two miles east of this village,
about 1:15 Tuesday afternoon by which Evi E. Casterline was instantly and horribly
killed.
Mr. Casterline was a work with D. C. William' gang of bridge carpenters on a bridge
near the crossing referred to and while running with a hot rivet was struck by a
west-bound freight and was instantly killed. the wheels passed over completely severing
it while the other leg was broken and the body otherwise horribly mangled.
The body was taken to Grant McDonald's undertaking rooms and Coroner Dutcher was
notified, but did not consider an inquest necessary.
The unfortunate victim was about 62 years of age and had for years worked with the Erie
bridge gang. He resided on Chestnut street in this village. he leaves a wife and two
daughter, Mrs. A. S. Williams of this village and Mrs. J. E. Yerks of Denver, Col. He was
a native of Big Flats and had lived at Owego some thirty years.
The funeral was held this afternoon from his late residence Chestnut street, Revs. Granger

the auspices of Friendship Lodge, No. 153, F. and A. M., of which he was a member. A
delegation from Ahwaga Lodge, No. 587, F. and A. M. was present.

It seems strange to me that Evi's obit doesn't mention the siblings who lived
nearby (Phebe Casterline-Catlin etc) and vice-versa.
Other tidbits of info:
Hannah Jane Smith was a daughter of Stephen H. Smith and Rebecca Spencer. Rebecca Spencer
was a daughter of my great-great-great-great grandfather Nathan Spencer.
Nathan's son Jonathan Spencer married Sarah Northrup, sister to Phebe Northrup.
According to NJ marriage records, Moses Casterline married Rebecca Northrup, another
sister to Phebe and Sarah Northrup. The book "The Catlin Genealogy" states
Moses Catlin, son of Jonathan Catlin, married Rebecca B. ____. My great-great aunt's
family history notebook states (unsourced) that the Catlin who married Rebecca Northrup
(Moses) was a brother to the Casterline who married Phebe Northrup (Evi). Jonathan Catlin
went by Catlin, Catterline and Casterline in various places (deeds, census, etc).
Phebe Northrup and Evi Casterline's daughter Phebe married Nathan S. Catlin, who was a
son of Jonathan Catlin and Martha Spencer. Martha was a daughter of the same Nathan
Spencer above.
The Spencers, Northrups and Catlin/Casterlines were quite inter-related.
