Hi Leoneita
I am going to attempt to put the Casteel Family together in Russell County
on how I think the are related. Also the Book I was asking about was the
Barbara Yarberry Casteel Book? I thought somebody mentioned that it listed a
JOHN CASTEEL as a son of Joseph and Margaret Casteel of Russell County, VA.
But I can't find anyone to verify it.
The first Casteel's we have appearing in Russell County, VA were listed on the
Tax Rolls 1796-1802. These Casteel's were:
ROBERT CASTEEL
JOSEPH CASTEEL
WILLIAM CASTEEL
JOHN CASTEEL
CASTEEL RECORDS in Russell County, VA
Nov. 3, 1799 Samuel Strong purchased land from Hiram Kilgore on Copper Creek
next to JOHN CASTEEL and Samuel Estep. Signed by Hiram Kilgore. Witnessed by
JOSEPH CASTEEL, JOHN CASTEEL and WILLIAM GLENN.
Jul. 29, 1797. Joseph Casteel purchased land from John and Nancy Wood on
Copper Creek (now Scott County, VA). This was signed by John and Nancy Wood.
Witnessed by JOHN McCLELLAND, JOHN CASTEEL, and JOSEPH CASTEEL (Jr.)
Sept. 23, 1803. John Casteel purchased land from Hiram Kilgore near Copper
Creek. on lines with Samuel Strong, Zeb Lovealls and ANDREW McCLELLAND.
Signed by Hiram KIlgore. Witnessed by SAMUEL STRONG, MARGARET CASTEEL, SAMUEL
CASTEEL. This land placed Joseph Casteel, John Casteel, Samuel Strong and
Thomas Strong all living next to one another in the same area.
On March 27, 1803 JOSEPH CASTEEL died and his will only listed the following
children: His wife, MARAGRET CASTEEL, his sons SAMUEL CASTEEL and JOSEPH
CASTEEL and one daughter JEAN CASTEEL (also called Jenny Casteel).
After the WILL on August 6, 1806 JOHN CASTEEL, JOSEPH CASTEEL, SAMUEL STRONG
and his wife NANCY, WILLIAM GLENN and his wife, ROSANNA, WILLIAM CASTEEL and
MOENIY CASTEEL (infants under the age of 21 years) by JOHN CASTEEL their
brother and friend.. Plaintiffs.... VS. MARGARET CASTEEL and JOHN
McCLELLAND, exeutrix and executor of the Will of JOSEPH CASTEEL, and SAMUEL
CASTEEL and JENNY CASTEEL... Defendants.
Note: Margaret Casteel is not believed to have died until 1808.
October 6, 1806 Thomas Strong was charged with Swearing by SAMUEL STRONG and
JOHN CASTEEL.
July 8, 1808 John McClelland sold Thomas Strong land on Copper Creek. JOHN
McCLELLAND purchased this land from ROBERT CASTEEL on December 12, 1801.
Witnessed by SAMUEL STRONG, WILLIAM FIELDS and SAMUEL CASTEEL.
Note: Samuel Strong is a relative of William Fields, and William Fields'
daughter, Aggy Fields, married Samuel Casteel.
October 8, 1810 JOHN CASTEEL of BARREN COUNTY, KY sold his Russell County, VA
land to TEAGUE QUILLEN. This land is adjoined by the property of SAMUEL
STRONG, Zeb Lovealls and ANDREW McCLELLAND (John Casteel's father-in-law).
sIGNED BY john casteel. Witnessed by SAMUEL STRONG, THOMAS STRONG and JAMES
QUILLEN.
So we know that JOSEPH CASTEEL states that SAMUEL CASTEEL, JOSEPH CASTEEL
and JEAN CASTEEL are his children in his WILL in 1803, then after his death
his will is contested by JOHN CASTEEL (another son as the Yarberry Book
allegedly states?), JOSEPH CASTEEL (I assume this is Joseph Casteel, Jr. that
was mentioned in the Will, but what's his problem?), SAMUEL STRONG and his
wife, NANCY (is she another daughter of Joseph Casteel?), and then we have
WILLIAM GLENN and his wife ROSANNA (is she also another daughter? William
Glenn was listed as a witness on a deed with Samuel Strong and the Casteel
boys). Then we have infants WILLIAM and MOENIY CASTEEL, reprsented by bother
JOHN CASTEEL.
CHILDREN of JOSEPH CASTEEL?
JOHN CASTEEL, said to be the son of Joseph and Margaret Casteel by Babrbara
Yarberry. John Casteel was said to marry ELIZABETH ANN McCLELLAN, the daughter
of ANDREW and Rebecca McCLELLAN. In 1810 JOHN CASTEEL sold his land to TEAGUE
QUILLEN. It appears that according to this document JOHN CASTEEL was now
residinfg in BARREN COUNTY, KY.
NANCY CASTEEL ?
WILLIAM CASTEEL ?
MOENIY CASTEEL ?
SAMUEL CASTEEL, son of Jospeh Casteel and Margaret. He married AGNESS "AGGY"
FIELDS, the dau. of William and Sarah Fields, according to her Death Record in
Scott County. Remember that the Fields are related to the Samuel Strong,
Thomas Strong and William Strong, Aggy Fields Casteel was their cousin. Samuel
Casteel died abt. 1814 and Aggy remarried.
JEAN "JENNY" CASTEEL dau. of Joseph Casteel and Margaret was born about
1785-1795. She appears to have moved to Barren County, KY in 1810-1812 with
her brothers JOHN CASTEEL, JOSPEH CASTEEL, and JOHN CASTEEL.Jr. On July of
1812 she married SAMUEL STRONG in Barren County, KY. Samuel strong was married
to Nancy (Casteel?), not sure what happened to her.
JOSEPH CASTEEL (Jr) son of Joseph and Margaret Casteel was born abt, 1776
moved to Barren County (now that part of Monroe County), KY in 1812 and then
to Jackson County, Tennessee.
Other related records.
Requarding the QUILLEN names that heep showing up on some of the deeds, Thoams
Strong and his wife, Annie FIELDS-Strong, had a daughter Mary Polly Strong
that married John QUILLEN, the son of TEAGUE QUILLEN. Another daughter Sarah
married a Greenbury QUILLEN.
Well this is all I can think of for now.
Take care
Dave
