To: Casteel researchers,
I would like you to consider and comment on the following:
After many years of searching, eliminating and some gathering of facts,
I am very close to considering Abednego Casteel and Agness Hensley the
parents of James Monroe Casteel. I would like to share with you what I
have and get your opinions.
James Monroe Casteel was born 24 feb 1812 in TN.
His father was born in TN & his mother in VA.
These facts fit in with what we know of Abednego & Agness.
1830 Knox Co. TN Census:
1 male 40-49 Abednego Casteel (of TN)
1 male 20-29 Abraham Casteel
1 male 15-19 (possible son: James M. Casteel; 18yrs)
1 male 15-19 (son)
1 Male 10-14 George W. Casteel
1 Female 40-49 Agness Hensley Casteel (of VA)
1 Female 20-29 (Daughter)
1 Female 5-9 Hazy Casteel
1 Female 5-9 Amanda J. Casteel
1 Female 5-9 (Daughter)
1 Female 0-4 Elza (Eliza?) Casteel
James M. married Susannah Underwood in Knox Co. TN 08 Aug 1833;
the same county of residence of Abednego in 1830.
James & Susannah resided in Blount co. during 1840 census as did
Abednego and his family.
1840 Blount Co. TN census
Abednigo Casteel
1 male 20-30 George W.
1 male 50-60 Abednego
1 female 5-10 Adaline
1 female 10-15 Amanda
1 female 10-15 Elza
1 female 15-20 Hazy
1 female 20-30 (daughter)
1 female 40-50 Agness
Those are our only factual links...(and a lot of gut feelings)
The rest is....
In 1850 census James and his family were found residing with the Stover
family in Hamilton Co. TN.
They later moved to Macoupin Co.IL, where they are buried along with
many of their offspring and families.
Children of James M & Susanna Casteel:
Jane b. c 1834 TN
Joseph M. b. 10 Mar 1836 TN
Ruth M. b. 04 Jan 1839 TN
Richard W. b. 08 aug 1843 TN
Martha b. c. 1845
Lafayett b. c. 1847
Benjamin I. b. 16 dec 1850 TN
James Polk b. 09 Aug 1854 TN (our ancestor)
Massey b. after 1850
Lizzy b. after 1850
Mattie b. after 1850
I have researched many different lines. My Austro-hungarian line is
nearly impossible, my mother-in-law's french-canadian line is full of
info, but this Casteel line is quite a challenge. I know many of you
are more seasoned than I am in genealogy so I am hoping for some
advice. A researcher told me once that sometimes 'all you get is
everything you already have' and you just have to take it from
there...but I am not the kind who randomly links up with someone just to
creat a "pretty ancestry chart". Maybe this time I'll have to do a
'best educated guess' type link. Any suggestions (or help) greatly
appreciated.
