Hope everyone had a great Christmas. I have two things for the group.
FIRST: The Strong research group is doing a DNA Test so that they can connect some of the
Strong lines that have been left out in the cold so to speak. I am forwarding this inf.
for the CASTEEL members to think about and for someone that might be interested in taking
up such a project. It would not do me any good since my Y Chromosome would match a STRONG
and not a CASTEEL. There is also a test for CASTEEL women.

SECOND: is a letter that may interest the VA aand KY CASTEEL researchers
Hi Dave,
Thanks for sending your email address. I'm a Cazzell researcher, I research
with several others on the Cazzell line and some of the research I was
fortunate enough to acquire goes back over 25 years. Our oldest known
ancestor is William Cazzell Sr., he was born circa 1780-1783 somewhere in Va
(per census recs). William Sr. had 1st wife unknown and second married
Judith Lewis in 1826 in Floyd County, KY. He already had five children when
he married Judith. Strangely, William and his sons last name varies from
Casteel, Casteal, Castile, Casstel to Cazzell, Kazzell etc. From 1850
forward the surname is always Cazzell. The oldest record I have found with
some similiarity to Cazzell are these records from Russell County, VA.
Russell County VA, Personal Property and Land Tax Lists
1796 Personal Property List. Lower District.
Carele, Joseph 2 tithables
Carele, Robert 1 tithable
1797 Personal Property List, Lower District
Cazle, Joseph 1 tithable
Cazle, Robert 1 tithable
1798 Personal Property List, Lower District
Cazele, John 1 tithable
Cazele, Joseph 3 tithables
Cazele, Robert 1 tithable
1799 Personal Property List, Lower District
Cazele, Joseph 3 tithables
Cazele, Robert 1 tithable
From your site:
Known Children of JOSEPH CASTEEL, SR.
JOHN CASTEEL
NANCY CASTEEL
JANE JENNY CASTEEL
SAMUEL CASTEEL
JOSEPH CASTEEL, JR.
WILLIAM CASTEEL (I would like to know if you have found anything on
this William. In the will for Joseph Casteel Sr. that is on your site he is
under 21 years old and this is 1803) 1803-21=1782, this is the timeframe we
have for the birth of our William Cazzell Sr. circa 1780-1783. I have read
your research over and over and there are a few things that stand out to me.
ROSANNA CASTEEL
MOINEY CASTEEL
The first coincidence is this record, Nancy the daughter of our William Sr.
marries the son of Ruebin and Sarah Mathews in 1825, Pike County, KY. So
this record shows that some of our group at least had some ties to your
Strong/Casteel group.
March 24th, 1810 in Russell County Virginia; Reubin Mathews and his wife,
Sary, to Samuel Strong, all of Russell County, for $ 400, 43 acres below the
mouth of Gray's Creek, north branch of Copper Creek, including Bryans lower
lick-logs, and bounded... Beginning in a holler on the west side of a
branch... on the bank of the creek and up the same... mouth of Gray's
Creek... crossing the creek... it begin 43 acres, which land was granted by
the Commonwealth to James Desert on April 22, 1793. Signed by Reuben Mathews,
Sarah Mathews. Witnessed: Teaque Quillen, Richard Gillum, and Jesse Gillum.8
Note: Thomas Strong (a2d4) and Annie Fields-Strong had a daughter, Mary
Strong, who married Thomas Quillen, the son of Teaque Quillen.
PIKE COUNTY, KENTUCKY
Nancy Casteel married James Matthews on February 17, 1825. James Matthews was
the son of Reuben Matthews; Letter of Consent from William Casstel for his
daughter, Nancy Casstel to marry James Matthers dated February 7, 1825.
William Casteel married Nancy Runyon December 29, 1829, daughter of Henry
Runyon, William Casteel signed the bond. (This record is for William
Cazzell Jr.)
The other thing that interest me is the migration of your group, William Sr's
children were born in Va, then they show up in KY. Most of our group also
leaves KY around 1850, they spend a few years in Ohio and then go on to
Chariton Co., MO and a few surrounding counties in the 1850 through 1880's.
Some of them go on to TX, some stay in MO, a few stay in KY. We also have
ties to Scioto Co and Hamilton Co., OH and one group goes to Indiana. My
GGrandpa John Henry Cazzell married 1904 in Camden County, MO. Interesting
that Jane Jenny Casteel Strong is found in Camden County, MO in 1850.
Mostly I'd like to know if you have ever found anything on William the son of
Joseph Sr. I would like to keep looking at him or eliminate him! Also,
would like your thoughts on the Mathews connection to our group and any other
thoughts you might have. Thanks so much for your time I'd really really like
to hear back from you. William Cazzell Sr. has been a mystery to us for a
very long time. One other note I'd like to add is I met another link to our
Cazzell line about six months ago. She says in an email "I don't know how
to write it down but my G-Aunt Myrtle used to tell me it was Dechastell, she
said it something like Dechazell, then like I said so many things to
consider, things get handed down, the different accents and the way record
keepers spelled, it all gets confusing" This comment really got my attention
and made me wonder if we are somehow from Casteel after all! Our old records
aren't really spelled Cazzell but like I said they have been Cazzell for over
150 years now!
Look forward to hearing from you,
Marsha Stanford
