Subject: Edmund DuCastell/Casteel/Castle
Where in colonial Philadelphia might Edmund DuCastell and his wife Christian be buried?
Christian's family were Dutch quakers who settled in Germantown in 1682. She and
Edmund were married in the Quaker fashion in 1693, both died about 1713/1714. The
settlement of their estates gives no clue as to what may have happened to Edmund DuCastell
or where he may have died. He was a prominent merchant and after 1702 captained the
schooner Resolution as a privateer in Queen Anne's War. Their Philadelphia home was
on Delaware Front Street, between Walnut and what is now Gatsmer Street. Edmund's
home was adjoining that of Anthony Morris, leader of Philadelphia Quaker Meeting, which
was within a block or two. Where might Quakers of the time period 1681 thru 1725 be
buried? Was there a cemetery at this meeting house which I understand was demolished many
years ago? Would quarter and yearly meeting minutes note passing of its members?
I'm full of questions and living clear across !
the country is frustrating as I prefer on-site research. Any help out there?
