Hi Marjorie,
This must be a family trait. In my Casteel line, the g grandchildren of John
Casteel b 1778 Greenbrier Co VA, most are called by their middle name also.
Makes research even more difficult. My grandfather Sherman Casteel was
actually William Sherman Casteel. If he included any name in his signature
besides Sherman, he used W Sherman Casteel. Four out of six of the children
of his father, Felix W Casteel b 1841 Laurel Co KY, used their middle name.
I notice you list a William Casteel b about 1815. I am looking for a William
M C Casteel. This man signed a legal document as a witness in Laurel Co KY
1853 with this signature. I have a copy of the originial document. This
document is a Permission to Marry for the daughter of Hiram Casteel a son of
John Casteel b 1778. I find no other record of William M C Casteel in that
county. He doesn't fit in my direct line or as a child of John Casteel b
1778. He is surely a Casteel relative.
My John Casteel b 1778 has no known siblings and his parents are unknown.
This William M C Casteel could be a link to another Casteel family.
