THE PASSING OF A PIONEER WOMAN
Funeral of Mrs. Elizabeth Casteel, Aged 87, Held Monday.
Mrs. Elizabeth Casteel, aged 87, died Saturday morning at the home of
her daughter, Mrs. Sadie Street. She had been ill for several months.
She was a pioneer resident of this community. She is survived by
three daughters, Mesdames Geo. E. Roller, J. F. Kiger and Sadie
Street, all of this city.
The funeral services were held at the M. E. church Monday afternoon,
conducted by the Rev. J. O. Carder. Interment was made at Humeston
cemetery.
The following obituary was read at the services by the minister:
Elizabeth Honlad Casteel was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, July 29,
1831, and died in Humeston, September 28, 1918, aged 87 years, one
month and 29 days. She was the oldest of seven children and was the
last one to lay the burden down, the rest having preceded her. Mrs.
Casteel joined the Methodist Episcopal church in young girlhood.
She was married to Joshua Casteel on the second day of October, 1851.
To this union was born five children, Mrs. Ellen Kiger, Mrs. Laura
Roller, Mrs. Sadie Street of Humeston, two daughters having preceded
her to the better world.
She was the grandmother of seven children and eleven great
grandchildren. Mrs. Casteel came to Iowa in 1864 and settled on a farm
near Humeston, later coming to Humeston, making their home here until
the death of her husband, nine years ago. Since that time she has made
her home with her daughter, Mrs. Sadie Street.
