Bedford Co. TN?
John CASTEEL is listed as one of the earliest settlers in
Bedford County by the GOODSPEED Histories. It is believed that he was the
son of a John and Jemima CASTEEL and grandson of Zachariah CASTEEL of Greene
Co. TN. Zachariah and two of his brothers, John and Peter, moved from MA,
where they had served in the French and Indian Wars, to the Lick Creek area
of NC, now part of Greene Co TN. Zachariah, John, and Peter were the sons
of Edmund CASTEEL II and Johanna ACRES who moved from Philadelphia, PA to
Prince George Maryland.
John CASTEEL of Bedford Co. TN served in the War of 1812. He is
listed in DAVIS' Battalion, in the regiment of Tennessee Volunteers
commanded by Col. ROBERTS, in the company that was furnished by Bedford Co.
and led by Lt. Isaac BARLETT. They fought the Creek Indians and were
present at the battle of New Orleans. One of his military records gives his
name as James John CASTEEL. In order to distinguish him from other John
CASTEELs we are assuming that his full name is James John CASTEEL.
James John CASTEEL received five land grants in Bedford Co. for
a total of 180 acres and 60 poles. He married a woman named Elizabeth about
1807. She died in 1850 and he died before April 1858 in Bedford Co, TN.
Their known children were: (1)Blackstone, (2)William, (3)Jemima,
(4)Parthenia, (5)Abraham, (6)Mary E., (7)Sarah "Sally," (8)James Preston,
(9)Nancy, (10)Andrew. There may have been other children as there were
five males and eight females list in his household in 1830 census.
Blackstone was married twice and had the following known
children: (1)Sarah, (2)John W. who married Eliza Jane PARKS, (3)Elizabeth,
(4)Eliza, and (5)James Isaac "Blind Jim" married Nancy Ann STEELMAN and,
secondly, Henretta STEELMAN. He lived in the 22nd district east of the Mt.
Herman Baptist Church.
William was married first to Elizabeth G. BURDETT, daughter of
William BURDETT and Sarah LOWE, and, secondly, to Sarah WOMACK. His known
children were: (1)Patience Angline who married Berryman BRUTON and then
Alfred Green Chance WEAVER and settled in AR; (2)Samuel J. who married Sarah
MONTGOMERY and died in Lincoln Co.; (3)Eliza who died at a young age;
(4)Elizabeth "Bettie" Green who married Thomas M. WISE and died in Lincoln
Co.; (5)Lucretia "Cressie" married Tom BLEDSOE, son of David BLEDSOE and
Christina JETT, and moved to TX before 1900; (6)Pickney who married Annie
WISE; (7)John C. who married Mary E. HASTINGS; (9)George B. who married
Margaret T. JETT, daughter of Bayless JETT and Christina BLEDSOE;
(10)William Reuben; (11)Jennie; (12)Manda; (13)Hawkins C.; (14)Louisa;
(15)Charles; (16)Finis who married Addie???; and (17)Fanny who married James
MARSHALL.
Jemima, born January 9, 1815 married Banks A. BURROW son of
William BURROW and Mary BURROW. Their children were: (1)Nancy Caroline born
April 27, 1838, married Elijah Reedy PATTERSON son of Elijah PATTERSON and
Machell ARNOLD and died in TX; (2)Rebecca Adaline married James F. HASTY;
(3)Elenor Caldonia married Willie Anderson PATTERSON; (4)Malinda Angeline
born March 28, 1846 and married John Dennis HARRIS son of D. HARRIS and
Amanda BRYANT; (5)Pathenia born September 8, 1849 and married James MULLINS;
(6)Matilda A. born February 15, 1855 and married Jacob "Jake" S. HASTY son
of Joseph HASTY; and (7)Mary Evaline married Sam DAVIS.
Abraham married Mahala BURDETT, daughter of William BURDETT and
Sarah LOWE. Their known children were: (1)Benjamin who married Jane
MONTGOMERY; (2)Nancy Lucretia; and (3)James Mannon born March 29,
1853,married Mary Ellen WARREN daughter of Daniel WARREN and Elizabeth
PHELPS in Lincoln Co and died in Moore Co. TN. Abraham was killed by a band
of marauders who were robbing his smokehouse during the Civil War.
James Preston was born January 6, 1860 and was married first to
Elizabeth BRUTON, daughter of George and Malinda BRUTON, and secondly to
Hannah LOWE. His children were: (1)Thomas Marion married Nancy JENKINS,
daughter of Benjamin JENKINS, and secondly to Nancy J. WOODARD. He settled
in Wayne Co. TN. James Preston's other children were: (2)Calvin; (3)Mary
Frances; (4)George; (5)Franklin; (6)Sarah; (7)James P.; (8)Eliza; (9)Mary
C.; (10)Samuel; & (11)Harvey.
James John Casteel's daughters, Parthenia, Sally, and Nancy,
never married. Andrew is assumed to have died young.
Among the known local descendents of James John Casteel are: Ola
Casteel Curtis and Bessie Bledsoe Redd of Shelbyville, Lizzie Casteel McGee
of Lynchburg, Dorothy Powell of Mt. Herman, and Virgil Casteel of Flat
Creek.
