I'm seeking anyone who might be researching the Casteels who are found
in Clermont County, OH in the early 1800's, and then removed to Fountain
County, IN.
Some Casteel researchers have expressed the opinion that the Robert
Casteel found in early records of Clermont County, OH is the same Robert
Casteel who is named in the 1810 will of one Dennis Harty, and that
Robert was the husband of Dennis' daughter, Phebe. In a recent trip to
Clermont County, we found court records involving a Robert Casteel and
his wife Catharine. Does anyone have any information as to whether or
not Phebe and Catharine are in fact the same person? Jacob Casteel also
appears in early court records.
At the Fountain County, IN library, a record of the Mt. Carmel Cemetery
(this is probaably the source of the information I believe is also
contained in Jean Casteel Brown's book) lists the following Casteels:
Catherine, Charles B., David, Hyram, Mary E. and Rebecca. We were
unable to locate the graves of Catherine, Charles B. or Hyram. The Mt.
Carmel church is still active, and the cemetery is fairly well
maintained, but there are many markers that are broken or for some
reason have been moved from their proper position and are piled around
shrubs and trees. The marker for David had recently fallen over, but was
still lying at the gravesite. In addition to those listed in the
library record, we found on the reverse of Rebecca's marker the
following inscription: George Casteel died July 18, 1865 aged 70 yrs. 5
mos.
I have more information that I will be glad to share. E-mail me at:
