You will find this line is a "very tangled mess"!! DeWitt, Casteel, Beechley,
Sisler, Savage, Burch, etc.
Cousins married cousins, they lived in remote areas - my line, unfortunately!

Subject: [CASTEEL] attn: Lramz...re: Margaret DeWITT
Lynn, sorry for the delay in replying to your post. I have some persons that
kinda/sorta match up with your posted info. I have a Martha Ann CASTEEL DEWITT married to
Peter BEECHLEY from Allegany Co., MD....while they were living in KS circa 1850-1860 her
sister, Margaret, came with her husband...stayed over for I think a couple of months
before moving on to Nebraska. My Martha Ann was supposed to be full-blood Native
American, possibly Cherokee (but that's another story).
Martha Ann and Peter BEECHLEY went to OK for the land rush on 1890+ where he contracted
malaria and died. She ended up in Northern ID living with her daughter, Margaret, and
died there in 1916.
Yes, this is a most confusing tangle of names with CASTEEL and DEWITT...I think there
were quite a few marriages between the two families hence the confusion.
regards,
Janice

Subject: [CASTEEL] Who is Margaret DEWITT, b. ca. 1834, MD?
Dear Listers,
The identity of my ggg-grandmother, Margaret __? DEWITT, is a complete mystery to me,
and I've been researching her identity for over twenty-five years. She seems,
however, to have some connection to the CASTEEL family line of John and Margaret (FRIEND)
CASTEEL. John and Margaret migrated from Fayette Co., PA. to Menard Co., IL during the
Civil War about the same time that Margaret and her second husband, Barney DEWITT did.
John and Margaret had a daughter, Mary CASTEEL, who married William DEWITT, Barney's
uncle. One of Mary and Wm's children was named Margaret, but nobody seems to have a
definite birth date for her. The date I found on Rootsweb and elsewhere is "about
1842". There is no further information on her, such as who she married, when she
died, etc. I've often thought that this was my Margaret, but when I located William
DEWITT's will, she was not mentioned among the names of his daughters, although my
Margaret was still living. William and Mary, along !
wi!
th most of their adult children and Mary's brother Thomas and family, also
migrated to the area of Seward & Butler Co., NE about the same time (early 1870's)
that Margaret and Barney migrated from IL to York Co., NE next door. Is this a
coincidence? Or is there a family connection?
The following data is all the information I've gathered about Margaret over the
years. Perhaps someone out there has the missing puzzle piece that will help me solve
this mystery:
Margaret "Maggie" ___? (FRIEND? CASTEEL?) DEWITT?
b. ca. 1834, MD (census records)
fa. born PA., mo. born VA (census records)
grew up in Allegany Co., MD (pension deposition for Barney's brother)
Had a brother who served in the Civil War (pension deposition for Barney's
brother)
Married (1) unknown person, about 1850, MD. (possibly another man named DEWITT)
Had one child, a daughter, Mary E., born ca. December, 1851, Allegany Co., MD. (census
records). Married
(2) Barnabas "Barney" DEWITT, in 1860, in Allegany Co., MD., the eldest
child of Peter, Jr. and Sarah (CASTEEL) DEWITT, of Allegany Co., MD. (census records &
Barney's death certificate)
Migrated to the area of Logan/Menard Co., IL around the time of the Civil War.
Migrated again to York Co., NE about 1869 with several other Allegany Co, MD families,
among them several children of John, Sr. and Margaret CASTEEL, and Margaret's daughter
Mary E., who had married Ellis S. FRIEND in IL in 1867. Ellis was the eldest son of
Stephen Willis and Rebecca (WILHELM) FRIEND, of Sang Run, Allegany Co., MD.
(census records and IL statewide Marriage Index)
I would be very grateful for any clues or suggestions - this family mystery is over 25
years old and one of my biggest brick walls!
Lynn
