This is regarding Thomas CASTEEL b abt 1753 and Sarah Ann...
How would one go about identifying and contacting the person who has
authored this information on KinNextions?
web address:
http://home.comcast.net/~hicarolyn/tree/aqwg465.htm
Specifically, my question is where is the proof that Thomas married
Sarah Ann?
Thanks,
Priscilla
This is what they have on their webpage:
Sarah Ann (CASTEEL) was born estimated 1770. She married Thomas C.
CASTEEL.
They had the following children:
M i
John CASTEEL was born about 1784 in Garrett Cty., MD.
M ii Jesse CASTEEL was born about 1789 and died 1861/1870.
M iii
Meshach CASTEEL was born about 1798 in Garrett Cty., MD.
M iv
Thomas CASTEEL was born 1799 in Bedford, Bedford Cty. PA.
There are several Archibald Casteels, and I think that 2 of them are
getting confused and combined.
Shadrack (b abt 1780) and Elizabeth had a son Archibald (b abt 1812
VA), who married Susan Sisler (b 1814, daughter of Samuel and
Margaret Sisler of Preston Co, WV). This Archibald and Susan had
children Margaret, Samuel, Isaiah, John W., George, Allen, Ann
Elizabeth, Caroline, and Jacob. This Archibald and Susan moved near
Williamstown, Wood Co, West Virginia, to be near their daughter,
Margaret, who married Charles D. Uhl. (1850 census hh 330/330, ED 5,
Barbour Co, VA; 1860 census hh 1866/1862, Twp not listed,
Williamstown PO, Wood Co, VA) Archibald and Susan (Sisler) Casteel
are buried in the Uhl Cemetery in Wood Co, West Virginia.
There is another Archibald Casteel (b abt 1803 MD) who married
Susan(na) DeWitt, daughter of Peter and Rebecca DeWitt. I have not
yet identified the parents of this Archibald Casteel. (1850 census hh
575/578, ED 10, Allegany Co, MD). In the 1850 census Archibald and
Susanna are in their 40s, but not listed with any children. Her
mother, now Rebecca Elliott, is listed in their household. They are
living near Nathaniel and Jane (McMullin) Casteel. In the 1860
census (hh 2021/1946, ED 14, Allegany Co, MD) is listed an Archibald
Casteel, who is probably the same person as in the 1850 census. He is
still living near Nathaniel and Jane (McMullin) Casteel. He is
living with a Sarah Friend. In the 1870 census (hh 76/76, ED 14,
Allegany Co, MD) this Archibald Casteel is still living with Sarah,
but she is now listed as a Casteel, and they have 2 children, William
and Jeremiah. They are still living in the same area as the children
of Nathaniel and Jane (McMullin) Casteel (who have both died.)

That is one of the unknowns in my research. My father, who did research
many years ago in Salt Lake City, listed Susan DeWitt but I have no
documentation on that. I haven't been able to find anything except a
marriage of Archibald Casteel, 65, to Sarah Ann Friend in Garrett County
Maryland 8/24/1874 (2nd wife??). I have Archibald possibly being born in
1803 in Garrett MD.
So Jesse was Shadrack's son also? What documentation do you have on
Shadrack?
I am so excited to find all of this information!
Betty

Archibald Casteel married 1st, Susan Anna DeWitt and 2nd, Sarah Ann Friend, daughter of Nicholas and Sarah Paugh Friend. They were married 24 Aug 1874, Garrett County, Maryland.
Sarah Anne Friend was married 1st to Ira Ellis Friend but never received a divorce, Ira then married a Clara Sisler. widow.
Clara Sisler, widow, filed for a pension on Ira's civil war service and recieved some payments before the govt. found out that Ira & Sarah Friend had not gotten a divorce and that Ira had left Clara property worth thousands of dollars.
So they bought charges of fraud against Clara and her step-son Cornelius Friend and a couple of witnesses.
In the records of the examiners of the case they questioned Cornelius in 1903 and at that time he was keeping Sarah Anne Friend Casteel and she was still living although he wouldn't let them talk to her.
It is reported that Cornelius Friend kept Sarah Anne in a room and that she was mistreated, some say they would toss her a crust of bread once in awhile.
Sarah signed over property worth over $7000 and mentioned by the examiner as being $18000-$19000.
*Harned Funeral Home, Bruceton Mills, West Virginia report: Susan (Sarah) Casteel died Dec. 3, 1916 Age 89 yr 5 mo. Buried Savage Cemetery. Billed to Cornelius Ward Friend, her son.

Subject: Re: Old John's line to John Henry Friend, husband of Savailla Savage
Isn't this an awful story but I feel it is true. Shirley Drent (FFAA librarian) said her grandmother remembered Sarah Ann and that as a child (the grandmother), along with other young children in the family would sneak out to the outbuilding where Sarah was kept and give her bread crusts. When Shirley's grandmother was asked if Sarah was crazy she said: "not any crazier than the rest of them".
When I heard the story the first time; I wondered the same thing as you, why didn't anyone help her but then I realized her brother, John of N. (my g, g, grandfather) died in the spring of 1900. Her brother Henry of N., who lived in Upshur Co., WV, died Feb. 1901.
Her sister Prudence Friend, wife of Joseph Fletcher Friend, who lived in Swanton, was a widow in 1910 (I haven't found when she died).
Sarah died in 1916. Archibald Casteel (her second husband) died before 1898. This is when (1898) Sarah signed to release her dower rights to Ira's land. Looks like they waited until Archibald died; maybe they were afraid of him.
So, all in all, I think her siblings were too aged or had already passed when Sarah found herself in this predicament.
Shirley also told me recently that Cornelius had a cart with a "cage" on which he would bring Sarah to town and parade her around as a crazy lady. I can't think the town allowed this behavior but when you look at the over all picture it seems Cornelius got away with just about whatever he wanted.
Ina told me too in 2003 (from my notes); "She was telling me the story of Cornelius Ward Friend, Jr. (1857-1959) and that it has been said that Cornelius was not very nice to his wives. She said that it has been said that David Hoye Friend could not stand to even see Cornelius, as he [Cornelius] had married his [David] sister, Emma Jane, and later David's daughter, Lizzie. She said Lizzie went to the home of Cornelius when Emma became ill, to assist the family, that Cornelius then got Lizzie pregnant and this was very upsetting to David.
Then there was Cornelius's father, Ira Ellis, who also had a reputation for being mean to his wives and how the he and his family had treated Sarah Friend, daughter of Nicholas Friend and Sarah Paugh Friend. Janice Sisler found a Harned Funeral Home record which seems to be for Sarah but they typed her name as Susan.
Connie Sisler sent me the following:
"Earl Harned Funeral Home records that were written by Janice Cale Sisler.
"Susan Casteel - Died: Dec 3, 1916, Age 89-5- (1828) Of Diarrhea
Buried: Savage Cemetery. Bill was sent to C.W. Friend."
Janice and I believe this is Sarah Friend Friend Casteel, mother of C. W. Friend" Sarah's story is a sad story in our family's history. I like to think that her life with Archibald Casteel was good and that at least while she was with him, she was happy.

I think I have traced my ancestors back to Edmond DuCastel of Philadelphia PA born in 1668. I am not so sure of the middle of my tree:
I have Edmond DuCastel's son as Edmond Casteel II, his son Edmond Casteel III, his son Shadrack Casteel, his son Thomas Casteel born in 1753, his son Shadrack Casteel born in 1780 in Bedford Cty PA, his son Archibald Casteel born in 1803 in Garrett MD.
Any information on any of these Casteel's?
My grandmother was a Casteel whose father started a little town in NE where I lived in later years. The Casteels seemed to be pioneers throughout history!

Hoye has listed John DeWitt (s/o Peter & Rebecca) as being married 1st
to Sarah Hartman and then 2nd to Louisa CASTEEL (d/o Shardrack CASTEEL
Jr.).
John and his two wives are buried in Hoyes Cemetery, Garrett, MD.
Who is the father of Shadrack Sr. if there is a Jr.?
Shadrach & Laurena had no daughter named Louisa to my knowledge.
Shadrack & Elizabeth had no daughter named Louisa to my knowledge.
Did Hoye make an error (he has before)? or did he mean something else...
Does anyone know the answer?
Priscilla
Dear Betty,
Some of my wife's CASTEELs moved to Nebraska. Who are they maybe I can help
some.
Regards,
Lance
