Thanks Colleen for the info. Though this isn't my Casteel line (mine is
supposedly through Henry from Wayne Co., TN), your info will be helpful for
the chapter that I'm writing on the Casteel family's migration for the
Edmund du Chastel del Blangerval's book.
Please let me know if you are interested in joining the group in the future.

carol, forgive me right now for not going to the booksite, just wanted to let you know my Castiles went to that name from Casteels on a TN 1850-60 time frame census. They came from Tn to Mo. married into the Ogles in 1850's. I have the info just don't have time to look it up presently. Thanks for sharing!

Blank am a Casteel descendant and researcher. I have set-up a Casteel
Surname Research "group" at diigo.com. This is NOT like this forum/list or
any other for that matter. It's not a substitute.
It is basically a place for us to have our Casteel research bookmarks, and
we can share them with each other. For example, I have abt 116 Casteel
bookmarks in the group already. That means that there are abt 116 websites
that I have bookmarked that have to do with the Casteel
surname -- and they aren't all from my line -- that I'm willing to share
with other Casteel researchers. You don't have to share, and can still
receive bookmarks from the rest of the "group". And, best of all, you don't
have to "talk" to anyone if you don't want to, and you can choose which
bookmarks you want.
3 other things:
1. You can add highlighting (just like you would in a book) to different
parts of the webpage and that gets shared when you share the bookmark.
2. You can add a "sticky note" anywhere on the webpage & it too is shared.
3. The system doesn't use folders to find/organize your bookmarks (no trying
to remember what you named it). It uses "tags" which are words and phrases
that you give the bookmark (tagging). Then when you need to look up all the
Casteel's from Preston Co., VA/WV from 1850, then you can put in one of the
words or phrases that you tagged it with (like 1850 or PrestonCo or Preston
or Virginia or WestVirginia or VA or WV -- whatever you used to "tag" the
webpage with.)
If you are interested in joining this research group, please contact me, and
I'll give the directions to join. BUT please remember this isn't just
another group where you have to communicate with anybody -- you just
bookmark and share as you research (& get bookmarks from
other Casteel researchers).
Thank You,
Caroline Pointer

I have been seeking the parents of Susannah E. Underwood (b. May 1816 TN) since Feb 1998. Maybe someone in our group has come across something I've missed when researching the Casteels in TN
Census records indicate her parents were born in the Carolinas.
She married James M. Casteel on 8 Aug 1833 in Knox Co. TN
Although
she died 07 July 1903 the Macoupin Co. IL records office could not
locate a death certificate for her. Her obituary referred to her only
as Mrs. James M. Casteel aged 87 yrs of Bird Township and made no
reference to her parentage or sibs.
In July 1903 - Just before her death there was a note in the local newspaper where she resided:
"E.H.Nix & mother are called to Susan Casteel's bedside. "
I have no idea who EH Nix is (or even if EH is male or female...).
I
believe this person is related to Susan though. I am guessing they
would be connected through her Underwood line because EH doesn't fit
any of our Casteel connections...
Over time I have come to suspect Benjamin Underwood to be her father.
I have located the following records referring to a Benjamin Underwood. Perhaps someone is familiar with any of them:
1830 Knox Co. Tennessee census
Underwood, Benjamin
males: 3 - 5-10yrs; 1 - 10-15yrs; 1 30-40yrs
females: 1 - 0-5yrs; 1 - 10-15yrs; 1 - 20-30yrs
Yes - she fits in there....
Also in Blount Co. TN:
Deeds 1819-1833 - abstracted by Jane Kizer Thomas
pg 161; 870. (3:194) Benjamin UNDERWOOD to Samual Henery and son:
30 Jun 1836, $75, 3 head of horse, 1 bay mare, 1 clay bank mare,
1 sorrell horse, 4 head of cattle, 35 head of hogs, 1 loom, 1 cart, 1
spinning wheel. Underwood shall pay Henry and sons the sum of
$75 within 12 months for redemption of the property. Sig:
Benjamin (X) Underwood. Wit: P. Nelson Morony, James Casteel
2 Jul 1836
well, there's a definite link
And in Hamilton Co. TN
1850 census
hh918 Underwood, Benjamin 62, M farmer NC; Mary 50 NC; Richard 29 M
farmer; Martha 17 F
I like their place of birth... but I do not know if these all refer to the same man.
To
be honest I have let this pursuit of Susannah's parents lie low for
quite awhile as I climbed other branches of our tree. Maybe something
new is out there that I haven't connected to yet.
Thank you for any help/suggestions.
Theresa

So, the question is:
Is Sarah Ann Casteel b 1750 the wife of Thomas C. Casteel b 1753 (s/o
Shadrach & Laurena)?
Let's look at the 1850 census. She is 100 living with Thomas and
Sarah. Thomas, it appears, is the son of Nathaniel (s/o Thomas b 1753)
and Sarah's grandson.
They are in District 2 Allegany MD. The actual location was near
Hoyes, MD, known earlier as Johnstown and sometimes was shown as San
Run, as the farm was about 1/2 way between the two locations. The
Thomas Casteel farm at Blooming Rose was located west of and across
the Youghiogheny River and about 8 miles by road from the location of
his son Nathaniel's farm.
Census:
1850 Sarah age 100 was residing very near to the Nathan, William and
Nathaniel Casteel farms.
Deeds:
In 1814 Thomas bought Black Oak Ridge & Narrow Escape.
In 1840 Sarah and heirs sold Black Oak Ridge and Narrow Escape.
I think that's proof enough to put this in the book!
What do you think?

This is info is unconfirmed:
Shadrack Casteel b.abt 1780 m. Elizabeth Whitecar
their son: Thomas Casteel b.1812 m. Huldah Browning
[Note: Huldah is listed as a daughter of Meshack, but in
his will she's not mentioned. Another source said she
was the daughter of Thomas Browning [Meshack's son].
If Huldah was abt the same age as Thomas Casteel,
Meshack would've been abt 31yo at her birth. Meshack's son
Thomas Browning would've been too young to have
had Huldah Browning. So, who's Huldah's father? If
she's indeed a Browning then she could be a daughter
of one of Meshack's brothers - Joshua or Jeremiah...]
Also,
John Hudson Casteel (s/o Thomas & Huldah)
m. Charlotte Francis Teets
Another Teets Family connection!

I had to go look, but yes, Thomas was the son of Shadrack and Elizabeth UNK and Shadrack was the son of Thomas born 1753 and Sarah Ann UNK.
I also have Huldah's parents as Joseph DEWITT and Elizabeth CASTEEL, daughter of Shadrack and Elizabeth- oh no, here we go again!

Thanks, Judy!
To make sure I have the connections right.... this Thomas Casteel was
the son of Shadrack Casteel and Elizabeth (Unknown)...this Shadrack
being the son of our Thomas Casteel b 1753??
Any idea who Huldah DeWitt was? I have Casteel, Friend, and
DeWitt....all as direct lines (just my luck <g>) ...but the only
Huldah DeWitt in my database (so far) was the daughter of Joseph
DeWitt and Elizabeth Casteel (dau of the same Shadrack & Elizabeth.)

Judy,
What can you tell me about Thomas Casteel (of Shadrack) and Huldah
DeWitt, and their children? There are as many Thomases as Jesses in
this family, and are just as confusing.

Lance, you need a FRIEND researcher to answer this - as I said in a previous e-mail, the Casteel's have been really hard for me.
In my line of descent, I have Jesse Casteel and Nancy Teets (my 3rd great grandparents)- their daughter Sarah CASTEEL married Jacob Fuller SISLER. Jesse & Nancy also had Thomas, who married his first cousin, Susan Elizabeth Casteel (Thomas (Shadrack)& Huldah DEWITT), whose daughter was Della Maude CASTEEL who married Elijah Fuller SISLER, son of the above mentioned Jacob Fuller SISLER.
This double dose of Jesse CASTEEL has my head spinning!

Thank you for the information on that Archibald, Judy. He's certainly
a possible candidate to be the Archibald listed in that newspaper
notice.
I have another possible, Archibald C. Casteel b 1839/41 m. Annie
Raymon/Rayman. (He was the son of Jesse and Nancy Teets). Archibald
and Annie were married in 1859 and were in Allegany Co., MD until
1873, when they moved to Somerset Co. PA.
Will the real Archibald please stand up!
