Mazarine Library in Paris
The indexes are arranged in an 'old books' section,
in a 'very old book' section and, you can guess the
next one, the 'very, very old book' section!
After first registering, you have to fill out a request sheet for EACH
book... your name again, address, number of the table they assigned you,
signature, book reference number, title, author, publisher, date
published, the SIZE of the book as indicated in the index!, etc (this is
true, I could never make up something like that, the size of the last
book I got was 22 cm, which is only ONE dimension but I decided not to
give them trouble on their apparent lack of math-physics culture).
Then you ask the librarian for the book who asks someone else to go look
for it. You tiptoe back to your table and WAIT. Everybody is really
nice except you have to KNOW the RULES. I started to fill in the
formulaires standing up at the librarian's desk and she politely told me
that you have to fill out the request SITTING DOWN at you assigned place
and then bring it back.
While waiting I snucked over to the computer terminal (they're not all
that old fashion I learned, self-service PC, some books can be
photocopied and old ones can even be photographed). They had the French
National Bibliothèque on-line! But no keyboard on the PC. I tried to
find a 'virtual' keyboard on the screen, one you can type on with the
mouse. Since I gave my profession as a computer analyst, I felt kind of
stupid asking them where the keyboard was. Well, it was 'hidden' in a
drawer under the PC...
The first book worked out all right. When I opened up the second one,
it was in LATIN! Panic. Should look at it for 15 min or so, pretending
I could read it... Then I remembered the book was written around 1850;
not many people wrote in Latin at that time. It turned out the guy
brought me the wrong book.
Anyway I was trying in particular to find information on names and dates
of the DU CHASTELs who immigrated to the USA. No luck on that. Below
won't really help much and it's not a genealogical tree as such but I
though you might be interested in it.

Notes (Mike) :
This last entry is interesting. Does it mean:
****************************** ************
- That the DU CHASTEL had no male heirs?
- Does this have something to do with "The last of the 'Du Chastel' "
=> 38502. Durand (L. Col. Pierre). Les dern. Du Chastel dans Cah.
Iroise 1964,IIe a., n.s., n° 2, p. 109-II.
- Apparently this happened in Madrid, Spain. Could this have something
to do with the Spanish CASTEEL family. Could this family have descended
from the DU CHASTEL?
At http://fly.hiwaay.net/~lparham/casteel.htm it was written :
... We have found one genealogy which states that the Casteel name was
Flemish, stemming from Gilles du Chastel, the founder of the du Chastel,
or van der Casteel, family ...

Sue's List of the 5 most important websites on the internet for
genealogy (This is in my opinion, and there are a number of good
sites beyond these, but for me, they are essential. You need to
bookmark these, as you will use them over and over again.)
John Fuller's list of maillists for Genealogy
http://members.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html
This has the most comprehensive list of mail lists on all the
servers for genealogy...Rootsweb, at Indiana.Edu, and everywhere
else.
The Gendex Index
This site is one of the larger collection of links to family
trees on line...
http://www.gendex.com
Rootsweb
YOu will want to go to rootsweb to access the search engines to
check the archives to the various mail lists and other searchable
materials. Also check out their list of guest pages that are
hosted on Rootsweb. Some of them are really invaluable sources.
http://www.rootsweb.com
Cyndi's list
You must have this one bookmarked. It is just too useful. I
don't know how Cyndi does it, but she's always expanding this
site, adding new categories, and just improving it constantly.
You can get to it from Rootsweb, or you can go there directly.
http://www.cyndislist.com/
The USGenWeb Homepage
This will get you to all the nice state sites, and then, to the
county sites. It will also get you to the USGenWeb Archives, and
to the WorldGen Project, which in turn can get you into sites
like the Genuki pages for those doing research in the UK.
http://www.usgenweb.org
With these sites, you can usually find something that will be
useful to you! And they will gateway you into a whole lot of
stuff you didn't even know was there!

Further on Lousia Eliza Casteel: Louisa Eliza Casteel, her husband and family
lived near Shadrach and Elizabeth Casteel in the 1850 Census of Barbour
County. The sons of Shadrach and Elizabeth lived in the same neighborhood and
all of these families had moved from Preston Co to Barbour County, so I assume
she is part of that family. We know from records she was a Casteel - until
this is proven differently, we will leave it as it is here.
If anyone has more on this family, email me private and I will pass it along
to this lady.

Looking for information on BOB MORRIS who was the nephew of ROBERT CASTEEL.
Noted in Rockcastle County Kentucky newspaper Sept 1906. Any information
on these two would be appreciated.

Ferne, you had mentioned you had TN IGI microfische for TN. Could you
possibly do a look-up for me? I think Casteels are multiplying in East TN!!
Could you look up any Casteels in McMinn Co. 1850 and 1860. There were
Casteels there, but I have no way to look them up.
We have a Casteel, Benjamin in Knox Co., TN who married to Anna Crews L:
Dec 21 1843. Then, there is a Casteel, Benjamin F. Jr. married to Edna M. Lusk
Dec 5 1895; bn F. C. Lecoultre. This is most likely the son of the first
Benjamin.
Listed in Early East TN Marriages - Casteel, Benjamin married to Martha
Madison -
10/12/1856 McMinn Co., TN. So, if we look for him in 1850 and 1860, we
might be able to find who he belonged to and who his children were. Hopefully.
Would appreciate any look-ups you can help with here.
Does anyone know if Benjamin Casteel, who married Anna Crews, is the son of
Abednego Casteel?
Anita
Robert Casteel of Laurel/Rockcastle Co KY was b 1857 the son of Lemuel Casteel
and his 2nd wife Henrietta Moberly. He married 1st Polly Riggs in maybe
Laurel County. This family moved to Mercer Co Missouri where Polly died and
she is buried in the Cain Cemetery same county. Most of their sons moved to
Oregon. After Polly died, Robert went back to Laurel/Rockcastle Co and
married 2nd to Lilly Lou LaVern Reese b 1885 Clay now Laurel Co KY the
daughter of Pearl Russell and Tandy Reese. Robert Casteel died in 1927. His
wife Lilly Lou took her family also to Pendleton Co Oregon where she died in
1960.
Sorry I don't know Bob Morris of Rockcastle. Could be the nephew of Polly
Riggs or Lilly Lou Reese???? I don't find him in Casteel records.

Am in search of some of the Children of Jesse and Hannah Casteel. They were
married in Ohio in 1844 and probably moved to IN around 1850. They were
located in Madison Co. IN, Duck Creek Twnship in the 1860 census. There
Children were David, Mary and John born in OH and Catherine and William F born
in IN . I have complete information on David and William ( my Grandfather) .
I have not been able to locate any information on Mary, John and Catherine.
Any Information greatly appreciated

Dave,
Yes, I have been having problems also. I was (I think) unsubscribed from
three different lists. Now that I have resubscribed I seem to be
receiving mail just fine.

Hi All, I'm in Franklin Ohio at my cousins. The Atlanta archives was
somewhat disapointing regarding old Casteel Records. From Atlanta went
to Antiock Cemetery north of Blairsville, GA , filmed about 12
gravesites of Casteels'. The Nashville Archives were fantastic. The
people were friendly and extremely helpful. The data is overwhelming and
there was to much to digest in the short time i had to peruse the data.
Thank goodness for my lady Barbara, she was very helpful in gaining the
extra material we found. I found the will for Edmond (not the fourth),
and now know that Mrs Edmond Casteel has a name, ( Elizabeth ) Unlike
Atlanta, i was able to take my laptop and Diogital camera into the
Archives at Nashville. We have land and tax information now and it will
take sometime to sort through the information. We'll be here until
Monday, then to Pittsberg, Philadelphia and Maryland. As soon as we
finish Maryland, i will let you all know if i had any sucess at Andrews
Air Force Base.
Gotta Go, C ya,
Dennis
