I became interest in family history as a child and started taking notes when
I was in the 3rd grade. I listen to my Parents, Aunts Uncles Grandparents
talk about covered wagon trips from TN to KY and my Great Grandfather on my
dads side of the family rode a horse from Attala County MS to Sour Lake TX.
I listened to the stories told when playing cards of how it took 8 days by
covered wagon from Kirbytown, Macon County, TN to Dennis, Logan County,
Kentucky in 1925 Bailey Peyton Cassity loaded up his 6 children still at
home and wife Callie Beatrice Climer Cassity and her Brother William Stanton
Climer and Children and Expecting wife Bessie Dycus went and visited Viola
Virginia Hughes Thomas Climer and James Manson Climer. They were the
parents of Callie and William. While there my mother told me and her
siblings of seeing a train for the 1st time in their life. They had never
had ice cream until Viola and Jim made it for them. While there they
visited William Jefferson Thomas Hughes their Uncle and brother to Viola and
other Thomas and Climer and Hughes Relatives. The Women slept in the
wagons at night and the men slept on the ground. They cooked on the trail
every morning and night. Callie Died 03/06/1928 and this was the last time
she saw her mother. It was the last time she saw her brother Clarence
Edward Climer Sr. and his wife Willie Mae Jackson Climer and their daughter
Jamie Climer.
My Great Grandfather Gregory of Attala County, MS rode a horse from Attala
County MS to Visit His brother in Sour Lake TX. Marshall Gregory. He owned
a hotel there and café. He stayed there for two years and then went back to
Attala County MS. Grandpa Gregory Owned, Hotels, Café, and mercantile
stores. The last one was in Zama, MS. It took him 2 months to ride there
by horse.
I cannot even imagine the task of taking a covered wagon trip or riding a
horse for two months to get somewhere. These are stories I have collected
for over 55 years and I put them in my family history book.
Just remember one thing. Get the youth in your family listening to the
stories. Start them out as babies telling them these things. That is what
I heard all my life.
My husband was from Johnson County KY and the land in the family has been
there since about the 1780s and there are log buildings there that date
back to that time. The history is rich there and they keep the stories
going. Many say these stories are not proof. However I have found them to
be very accurate many times.
My Cassity research started with my mother Viola Betty Cassity Ramsey
Gregory and she was born in Macon County, TN and Since then I have been part
of the Peeler and Gregory Books with my Aunt in Memphis in getting
information together. Our line starts in Devenish, Northern Ireland
Edmond Cassity, Patrick Cassity, Andrew Cassity, Peter Cassity, Thomas
Cassity, William Cassity, Elias Tobias Obidia Cassity, Marton Elias
Cassity, Bailey Peyton Cassetty, Viola Betty Cassity, and my self Jeannie
and my children and grandchildren.
I willing share with anyone as long as the information is never sold for
profit for anyone. I had lots of help getting what I have. Some not
verified but working on that. My private email is
