Research Notes for Phillip Ward Cassil
He was named in the obituary notice of Elias Cassil, 21 Apr 1942; [68]
identified in the photograph, "Louisa & Phillip Cassil;"[229] identified in
the photograph "Phillip & Louisa;"[230] identified in the photograph,
"The
Phillip Ward Cassil Family;" [231] in the article, "Golden Wedding
Anniversary;"[251]
He erected several dwellings in MO and one school house...he assisted in
building Bethel Church..Several homes and businesses were built by him,
including the Jamestown Creamery.[162]
He taught school for 22 terms.[161] Concerning the Vaughn Shcool House, he
taught "good school there...and understands school discipline
thoroughly...Good order prevails...quite a successful teacher.[163] He was
dedicated to education...served as schoolmaster.[162]
He was "concerned about proper spiritual values for his family and others
in the community...and took an active role in the church, organizing a
choir and taking singers to visit other congregations."[162] He was called
an "enthusiastic church worker..."[164]
In politics, he was independent.[161] He was called a "loyal
citizen...and...good neighbor."[164]
An error was made on the death record of Louisa Partee, his wife; and he
was named as her father.[165]
One account suggests that he was born in 1833.[161]
He served as Secretery of Bethel Church from 02 Dec 1878-1888,1896-1899; he
then transferred to the Jamestown Church;[194]
"Methodist Church, South,--The Bethel Methodist Church four miles east of
Jamestown, the first Methodist Church inthe county, dates back to 1840.
Among the early preachers were Mr. Wilbur, Thomas Wallace, [Mr.] Payne,
[Mr.] Thatcher, Daniel Leaper, John Gray, J. Monroe and Ben Donaldson. The
old building stood on Section 2, Township 46, Range 14, until five years
ago, when the site was changes to Section 28, on Bruce's Landing road.
James Miller Jr., and other trustees of the Bethel meeting-house, were
given a deed for two acres of land, by the administrators of James Miller's
estate, in August, 1846.
"The denomination built a church at Jamestown in 1889. There is a
building owned by the church on the southeast corner of Section 11,
Township 47, Range 15, while two miles above the mouth of Petit Saline, on
Section 25, Township 48, Range 15, is another building.
"Throughout the county several classes of Methodist Church, South, are to
be found, but the ante-bellum records, and in most instances the modern
books, are in such shape as to be almost useless for historical
purposes."[328]
