I'm looking to find my "Cassel" ancestors.
My great grand father was William Cassel (b. Feb 28, 1852, d. Jan 25, 1920
in Milw, WI)
He and his wife (Theresa Schulteis, b. May 22, 1857 d. Dec 15, 1919 in
Milwaukee)
lived in Ackerville, Washington Cnty, WI until about 1870, when they moved
to Milwaukee.
On the marriage certificate it's spelled "Kassel" but most other documents
it's "Cassel."
His father was Wilhelm Cassel (or Kassel, b. abt 1819, d. abt 1858 in
Wisconsin ?)
He farmed in Washington County Wisconsin, Polk township per 1855 WI census.
His wife was Elizabeth Hammerschlag, b. May 24, 1814, d. March 30, 1897 in
Wisconsin)
Their children were:
Gertrude b. 1844, John Joseph b. 1846, Peter J b. 1849, Bertram
b. 1850, and William (my great grandfather) b, 1852.
The 1860 census film is not very readable on their page, but Wilhelm was
not listed,
only Elizabeth and the children were listed on the 1860 census.
I assume they are from Kassel Germany, but I am aware of Peter Cassel from
Switzerland,
who founded settlements in both Iowa and Wisconsin, and a B. Samual Cassel,
who lived in roughly the same area as my ancestors, and B. Sam Cassel was
from Sweden.
I'm even aware that someone named Cassel came the the U.S. from France.
I am aware of the large number of people named Cassel in Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania and that their are quite a few people named Cassel in the Fort
Wayne, Indiana area too.
Can you give me any help?
