I have three great-great grandparents surnamed Castle. One of my
third great-great grandparents is John Cassell, son of Bazil Castle.
John was married in Floyd County Kentucky, 28 Dec 1815, to Elizabeth
Francis. On the 1830 Census he had one son age 15 to 20; two
daughters age 5 to 10; and two daughters age under five. One of the
older daughters was my ancestor, Mary "Polly" Castle who was born
about 1822 in Floyd County Kentucky. John moved his family to
Lawrence County Ohio before 1840. Mary Castle was married there to
Edward "Ned" Daniel, 27 Jun 1839. A "Bazzel" Cassel was married to
Polly Stumbaugh30 March 1837. Was he John's son? Who were his
children? Who were the other three daughters and who did they marry?
John himself was married 4 September 1841 to Martha Branum in
Lawrence County Ohio. Some say it was his third marriage. If so,
when did Elizabeth die? Who was the second wife? On the 1850 Census
of Lawrence County their family consisted of daughters, Charlotte,
Lucy, Susanna and Lydia, and one son, Marcus.
In 1860 they had moved back to Johnson County Kentucky and had added
another son, Washington (George Washington?). I believe that
Charlotte was married to Adam Ward. When? Where? Lucy married
William Ball 21 September 1856 in Johnson County. Lydia married
George W. Daniel in 1869, but where? John was living with Lydia and
George in 1870. Martha must have died by then as she is not listed
on the census. When? Where?
There was a George Castle who married Malinda Spurlock in Lawrence
County, Ohio, 18 January 1831. Who was he? How was he related?
What happened to him and Malinda? I could find no trace of them
after the marriage date. (He was too old to be John's son.) This
family has been so difficult to sort out. Please help!
