Need to know parents of Henry S. Cassel, born Pennsylvania March 30, 1822.
Married August 1849 in Holmes Co., Ohio to Catherine A. Bretz. Birthplace of
Henry S. Cassel is unknown except Pennsylvania, which is given on his Civil
War records. One Cassel researcher has said that many people who lived in
Shipack, Montgomery Co., Pa moved to Holmes Co., Ohio.
Henry married Catherine A. Bretz in Holmes Co., Ohio on Aug 30, 1849. Henry
and Jacob Cassel, who was probably his brother living nearby in Ohio, moved
to Millville, Iowa in 1855. Henry was a farmer and a blacksmith.
On July l9, 1862 when about 40 years old, he and William Cassel of Millville,
Ia., probably his 18-year-old nephew, (Jacob's son) enlisted in Co H 21st Iowa
Vol. Inf. Co. 28. Henry & nephew were described in enlistment papers as
5'8"
tall, black eyes, black hair, and dark complexion. On May 22, 1863 Henry S.
Cassel was killed by a musket ball shot through his head at Battle of
Vicksburg. This was one week after his wife in Iowa gave birth to their fifth
child. Only known descendants would be descended from his oldest daughter,
Elizabeth Caroline Cassel, born 1850 in Holmes Co., Ohio , who married
Leonidas Metcalf Peyton and had daughters Catherine and Mary E Peyton. The
latter daughter, Mary E., married John D. Cochran II and lived in Oregon and
Dayton, Washington as late as 1936 when her older sister Catherine Peyton Coon
died in Manchester, Iowa.
