In my message to this list on November 10 at 04:54pm, I stated that I would be submitting
information on the 11 children of James Cassidy and Martha Turnbull of Pictou, Nova
Scotia. In my initial message, I provided what I have on their son JOHN. (see below for a
little more on JOHN) This message provides information on their eldest son JAMES, my
ggrandfather, (b 1797/1798, Pictou, d 1880, Newcastle, New Brunswick). James married Ann
Hay (b unknown, d 1833-1835), January 27, 1824, Newcastle. (JOHN Cassidy, brother of
James, was witness to the wedding and so signed). Daughter Jane (b 1832, New Carlisle,
Quebec, d unknown), married William McNeil, 1854, Newcastle. James then married Eleanor
Thompson (b unknown, d 1877 Newcastle), March 3, 1836, New Carlisle. Children, all born in
New Carlisle or Port Daniel, Quebec include:
-Martha (b 1837, d 1906), married David Mathews (b 1835, d 1885), 1862, Strathadam, New
Brunswick. Children unknown.
-William (b 1838, d unknown), married Ellen Shaddick (b unknown, d unknown), 1863,
Newcastle. Moved to Bangor, Maine. Children unknown.
-John (b 1840, d 1909 Newcastle), married Flora Drusilla Astles (b 1842 New Carlisle, d
1911 Newcastle), 1861, New Carlisle. Nine children - James, Sarah, Ellen, Flora, Thomas,
Benjamin, Emma, Robert and another James (both James died young). John is my grandfather.
-Thomas (b 1841, d unknown) - no other information
-Benjamin (b 1844, d very young), no other information
-Robert ( b 1846, d 1924 Bangor, Maine) - moved to Bangor - no other information
-Mary Ann (b 1849, d 1973 Newcastle), no other information
-Margaret (b 1851, d unknown), married James Cantwell, (b unknown, d unknown), marriage
date unknown, Cambellton, NB
-Ellen (b 1853, d unknown), no other information
James was a witness to the marriage of Joseph M.M. Turnbull (his cousin) and Deborah
Caldwell, New Carlisle, Quebec, September 5, 1832. Jame's occupation was blacksmith in
New Carlisle and Newcastle.
One other point re JOHN Cassidy covered on November 10. John, in 1826, at age 26, married,
a native of Nova Scotia, asked for 200 acres on the Nepisiguit river (in Gloucester
County, New Brunswick). Resided in NB for up to 3 years.
