Subject: [OHSUMMIT-L] Question about Cemetery on St. Rte. 303
There is a cemetery on SR 303, just east of Peninsula. It is right
alongside
of the Happy Days Visitor Center in Cuyahoga Valley. According to
the
sign
at the cemetery, it is called "Mater Dolorsa" Cemetery.
According to the
list on the Summit County OHGenWeb site, it is called "Cassidy" Cemetery
(probably because one of the larger stones lists the Cassidy family and is
surrounded by a nice iron fence). There are stones for 19 people (we have
listed them on the Find-A-Grave site under "Cassidy - Mater Dolorsa
Cemetery").
Does anyone know if there is a reading on this cemetery, or if there are
other burials that don't have a stone? One odd thing was the location of
a
few stones, leading us to believe that they were reset where they
were
found,
but that wasn't necessarily where they were to begin with.
Also, we happened to stop to talk to someone walking through. He said he
had
heard that these people were all Irish immigrants (indeed, the names
all
appear to be Irish, and one stone listed the person as from County
Limerick)
who had worked on the Ohio Canal, but weren't allowed to be
buried in the
regular cemetery (we didn't find out which area cemetery this "regular"
cemetery was). Has anyone who knows about this cemetery heard this or
have
any further information on it?
One item of interest is that one of the earliest burials there is of
Thomas
Coady, a Civil War veteran (we will be taking up a CW flag holder and
flag
to
his grave as it was otherwise not marked as a veteran). But when we
got
home
and looked him up, it looks like he was among the soldiers on their
way
home
who were killed in the Steamer "Sultana" explosion! And he
lies in an
obscure cemetery that isn't even in our Portage-Summit County Street Atlas
(that seems to even show cemeteries that no longer exist).
By the way, the website for Find A Grave is
http://www.findagrave.com. Go
to
the non-famous persons surname index, or you can search by cemetery.
