Regarding James's e-mail about spam: good luck! As someone who works
in the industry, I can tell you that your having sent this e-mail to a
listserv will not ameliorate your problems -- and, in fact, you just
exacerbated your complaint by sending your post -- no matter how clever
you might think it is to "copy" only yourself! Your email address can
now be scanned by the whole world. This list, like all others, is open
to many spam opportunities; it is the price one pays for subscribing.
Some facts:
When you visit ANY site or send an email to someone moderately facile
with web technology, you have exposed who your ISP is, what site you
last visited, what browser you are using, and what pages you visit at
the site. (I know all this about James even as I write this)...
You can buy spam filters, but they require you to entire keywords to
block them (i.e., "hot deal", gambling", "XXX", etc.; even by
typing
these keywords on this post, I am subjecting myself to further spam)!
Spammers use robots to scan newsgroup headers and signatures, hunting
for anything that looks like an email address (basically, any element
with an @ symbol in it). Spammers then resell these lists to other
marketing companies, so a single posting could start an endless cycle
of spam. Just by sending this message, jimcasada(a)usa.net, you have
subjected yourself to further unwelcome messages! There's irony for
you!
Here's a technique that fools some of the sophisticated robots out
there, while still letting you receive messages from real, live humans.
In the "From" heading of your outgoing e-mail, replace part of your
domain name with a word like "nospam". For example, if your real address
is Sillygirl(a)earthlink.net, post under a name like Sillygirl(a)nospam.net.
I hope this helps everyone out there. I KNOW this list owner does not
make information available to outside parties for commercial purposes,
but everyone needs to be aware that even a simple posting is opening a
door to spam vulnerability!

I'm looking for information about siblings or other relatives of my
maternal grandfather James Thomas Cassidy, born in 1874 in Dalton, Mass.
and died in Holyoke, Mass. in 1924. I am really interested in his parents
whose names are James Cassidy(not sure of middle initial) and Margaret
Newman Cassidy who lived in western Mass and in Dalton, Massachusetts at
least when their son, James T. was born in 1874. His death certificate
says both of his parents were born in Ireland. I remember my mother saying
he had two sisters and I think they did not marry and lived somewhere in
western Massachusetts. I'd appreciate any information about these
relatives. Thanks

Dear friends,
Recently, I have been bombarded by a rash of chain letters and unsolicitated
mailing list type messages. Although I know that some of these are
legitimate, others are likely attempts by various web marketers to build up
large "blanket" email lists for further solicitations.
Since the greater majority of all email addresses are unlisted, and since
building up a legitimate mailing list takes up so much time and research in
order to reach the specific people that would actually be interested in
whatever it is that somebody may have to say, many less scrupleless web
marketers have devised various schemes to con others out of their personal
address book info (chain letters, promised free-be stuff, contests, etc).
Even though my email address is already listed with several various directory
services, stealing lists from others is also generally much quicker that
having to go through and type it out (or cut & paste) individual addresses, as
most directories will require to prevent spaming.
Until I can get this problem under control, all I am asking is that you please
don't openly list my email address on any outgoing messages so that unknown
others can view it. Almost all email systems have ways of suppressing the
view of various addresses to whomever else may be receiving copies (via blind
copies, consolidating addresses under list titles, etc). For example, I am
actually sending this message here to only myself, while I am blind coping
everyone else in my address book (plus some others from various recently
received messages). Otherwise, please feel free to contact me for any
reason.
Thank you very much for your understanding!
