Descendancy Narrative of (--?--) CASSIDY
I. (--?--)1 CASSIDY
A. (--?--)2 CASSIDY. Her married name was MIDGLEY. She married (--?--)
MIDGLEY. She died circa 1929.
1. Harry3 MIDGLEY MP was born circa 1893 in Ireland. He The existence of
Harry Midgley comes about though a political pamphlet sent to Aileen
Cassdiy. Mum has a copy of this pamphlet and it has wriitten on the top of
it your cousin Harry Cassidy Midgley. Harry Cassidy Midgley was. born in,
1893. He served with the Ulster Division during WWI and later published a
book of poetry based on his experiences in the trenches. During the 1920s
he was prominent in the trade union movement and was elected an alderman for
the Dock ward in 1928. In 1933 he was elected as a Labour member of the
N.I. parliament by the voters of the Dock division of Belfast. Midgley's
pro-socialist anti-catholic stance during the time of the Spanish Civil War,
however, lost him the support of many of the Catholic voters in the Dock
division and cost him his parliamentary seat in 1938. Three years later he
returned to Stormont as member of Willowfield and shortly afterwards broke
with the Northern Ireland Labour Party, accusing the N.I.L.P. of too much
sympathy with nationalism and republicanism. In 1943 he formed his own
Commonwealth Labour Party, which, as its name indicates, reflected Midgley's
own pro-union stance. Also in that year, he accepted Prime Minister Sir
Basil Brookes call to join the Wartime Cabinet as Minister for Public
Security and later Minister for Labour. He was the first ever non-unionist
to hold a government post. In 1945 Midgley left the Cabinet to successfully
fight the election for the C.L.P., but in 1947 crossed the floor of the
commons to join the unionist benches, to the outrage of many of his labour
colleagues. After two years on the back benches Midgely became Minister of
Labour and in 1950 moved to the Ministry of Education, where we presided
over a widespread school building programme circa 1933 in Belfast, Ireland.
He died circa 1957 in Ireland.
