OBIT (THERE IS A PHOTO)
VOLUNTEER FIREMEN OF 1847 WILL BEAR FELLOW-WORKER TO GRAVE TO-DAY
"Surviving members of Union No.2, a Volunteer fire company of sixty five
years ago in St. Louis, will carry to the grave the body of Rossington
Elms, 91 years old, a member of the company who died Tuesday afternoon in
the home of his son, Hugh R. Elms, 4347 Warne Avenue. The funeral will be
at ---- p.m. to-day, from the home to Calvary Cemetery. Joseph P. Boyce a
retired real estate man and captain of the old volunteer fire company
will preside at the burial.
"Elms was born in Dublin, Ireland, September 4, 1821, and came to St.
Louis in 1847, when the city was little more than a border town. He
became a member of the fire company and in the great fire of 1849 was
injured while on duty.
Elms was for fifty-two years in the employ of the Western Union Telegraph
Company, and was retired fourteen years ago on full pay. He is said to
have conducted the first commercial telegraph office in St. Louis. Three
sons survive him-- Edward C., with the Postal Telegraph Company; Hugh R.
and John A. Elms."
