I'm trying to figure out who the parents of my great, great, great
grandfather were. He died sometime between 1870 and 1880 on a steamboat on
the Arkansas River. A drunken crewmember bit his ear, it got infected, and
he died. He is buried somewhere along the Arkansas River in the
Clarksville, Arkansas area. I've only been able to find him in 2 censuses.
The last one was in Van Burean, Crawford County, Arkansas. In that one his
birth state is shown as Alabama. However, in the cemetery records for one
of his sons, it shows that he was born in North Carolina. He is also on the
1850 census and is shown as being born in North Carolina as well. All
records show him as either Loyd or L A, but I have relatives that believe he
went by the name Calvin.
All records indicate that he was born around 1843. He married Ruth
Bredrick, from Arkansas, most likely sometime in the early 1860's. They had
3 children Robert Lankston, Melvin Calvin, and Rosa.
The 1850 census shows that he and J C Casady, whom I'm assuming is his
brother were living with 5 grown men in Washington, Louisiana. They were 7
and 10 years old at that time. There were no females in the household. The
brother was born around 1840. The men were all between the age of 38 and
45. 4 of them had the last name of Petery or Peters (it's hard to tell for
sure on the census records) and the last one was name Israel Pierce.
Calvin (last name shown as Casidy) is shown in the 1860 census as still
living with Israel Pierce and his family, but I can't find Loyd in that
census. I'm assuming Calvin is Loyd's older brother J C because of his
age, but the age could have been wrong and this could be the one I'm
interested in.
I can find no other Casady's or any spelling variation of it in the 1850
census in the Washington, Louisiana area and haven't been able to find any
records of a family with sons of this age and names. My great, great
grandfather, who raised my dad for a few years, always told him that Loyd
came to Arkansas from Tennessee and his brother (shown as C J Cassaday) is
shown on the 1870 census as living in Memphis with a steamboat officer.
Both L A and C J were shown as steamboatsmen in that census. My dad
always believed that they were born in Tennessee, but this may be because
that's where he moved to Arkansas from.
If anyone has any information about this line, please let me know.
