Subject: Re: [CASSIDY] My Ontario Cassidys
Dear Nathalie:
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you about my Ontario Cassidys. I don't have
a lot of information to share, but I'm eager to piece together this newly discovered
branch of my family. Here it is:
I have been studying the St. Michael's / Polycarp parish records from Cobourg,
Ontario, where my grandfather Patrick John GORMLY was born. His father, John James
Gormly, is believed to have been born in New York, and John's father is believed to
be our Gormly immigrant from Ireland.
The parish records provided many new names to my tree, including the name of my
g-grandmother (John James' wife) Elleanor CASSIDY b 19 Nov 1848. Elleanor's
parents are Patrick CASSIDY and Ellen JONES. Other known chlidren of Patrick and Ellen
are: Bridget b Dec 1846, Belinda b 27 Oct 1851, Maurice b 24 Dec 1853, Catherine b 8 Jan
1856, Mary b 3 Feb 1858, Jane b 14 July 1860, Ann Winifred b 16 July 1863, and Elizabeth
Susana b 10 May 1866. The first 4 chldren (including my Elleanor) were born in Cobourg;
the last five were born in Hamilton, Ontario.
In addition, I have found contemporaries of my gg-grandfather Patrick CASSIDY in these
records that may be siblings or cousins (unconfirmed). They are: (1) Michael CASSIDY m
Sarah Maria BAILY, children CHARLES CASSIDY b 29 Sept 1844 and Jean CASSIDY b 3 Sept 1847;
(2) Mary CASSIDY m Dennis McFADDEN (3 known children); Catherine CASSIDY m Edward QUINN (3
known children); (3) Ann CASSIDY m Charles CALLEY (son Henry).
Additional CASSIDYs from these records: (1) Cornelius CASSIDY m Sarah CODY 1863; (2)
possibly another younger Ellen Cassidy b abt 1852.
Our GORMLY family left Canada for New York City in the early 1900's. I'm not
certain if the CASSIDY's (and MATTHEWS and JONES) branches of my Canadian family came
too.
Hope to keep in touch with you.
