Here is a note I received from my uncle who for years lived in Albany, NY on
William Cassidy:
William Cassidy is mentioned twice in William Kennedy's book "O Albany!".On
page 25, in connection with a fund drive for a new Sacred Heart
Church,Kennedy writes: "no donations over a hundred dollars (an exception
being the Cassidy family--William Cassidy owned the Albany Argus--who
donated the marble altar." On page 107, Kennedy writes "Dudley Row, a line
of brownstones on South Hawk Street, was a distinguished address....Former
two-term Governor Horatio Seymour lived on Dudley Row, and so did William
Cassidy, proprietor of Albany's leading newspaper, the Albany Argus."
Kennedy won the Pulitzer Prize for his novel "Ironweed," but consider this:
some reporters who worked with him at the Albany Times-Union
considered him inaccurate. Lotsa Cassidys lived in Albany and its environs
but I don't remember any who were members of the Fourth Estate.
