The Albany Airport had a display on Irish influence in Albany and it included
the following:
"William Cassidy 1815-73
The son of Irish immigrants, William Cassidy was educated at the Albany
Academy and Union College. He received an early introduction to politics from
his father, John Cassidy (1784-1838) who was a Democratic City Alderman and
leader of the Irish-American community. William Cassidy studied law with John
Van Buren, the son of Dem. President Martin Van Buren. He served as State
Librarian from 1841-43 when he became editor of the Albany Argus. A scholar,
philosopher and linguist, he helped formulate the anti-slavery philosophy of
the Dem. party in new York Stata before the Civil War. In 1856 through a
merger with the Atlas, he became editor of the Albany Argus. He was a member
of the NYS Constitutional Convention of 1867 and secretary of the NYS Dem
Party from 1868-73."
I may be connected with this guy in some way, having been raised in Albany.
If anyone has any information on him, I would appreciate it.
