Yo, Cassidys,
I'm researching the Cassidy line in County Meath, Ireland; in
particular, MICHAEL CASSIDY and his wife, MARGARET HINDS, HYNES or
HYNDES. MARGARET'S last name may have been recorded phonetically.
There is a record of their marriage in Longwood, Co. Meath, dated 8
April, 1861, and, later, the baptism of their only son, CHRISTOPHER.
Family lore has it that they lived in the Hill-of-Downs area near
Longwood, but that prior to the marriage, MICHAEL lived somewhere thirty
miles from Dublin. It is assumed that at the time, MARGARET lived in
that area also; possibly Killary; although there is or was a HYNES
family living in Hill-of-Downs. I have been to Longwood and
Hill-of-Downs, but was unable to find anything further.
There is an immigration record of a MICHAEL CASSIDY listed as
"primary individual" entering the U.S. through Philadelphia in 1872, but
does not list other members of his party. CHRISTOPHER, his only son,
was with him, and the date on his death certificate coincides closely
with the immigration record.. They eventually settled in Shohola, PA,
where CHRISTOPHER later met and married MARY ELIZABETH ENGLEHARDT.
MARGARET, however, remains a mystery. She leaves no footprints
either before their marriage or after the birth of CHRISTOPHER. Either
she died or they parted in Ireland, since there seems to be no record of
her in this country in fact or in family lore. I have an inquiry
placed in the Pike County, PA, Historical Society on the odd chance that
she did come to the U.S. with MICHAEL and CHRISTOPHER, and that she died
and was buried there.
If anybody thinks they may have a connection to this -- particularly
in Ireland -- I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks.
