Mary Hardin McCown, Nancy E. Jones Stickley, & Inez E. Burns, comp. Washington
County, Ten- nessee Tax Records (1964, Johnson City, TN) pp. 11, 12, 24,
182, 202, 243.
¶The Washington County, Tennessee Tax Records1 show a John CASEDY with an
estate valued at £100 in 1778. He paid a tax of £1.0.6. On the same list
Robert YOUNG, Senr. had an estate valued at £1815.0.0, taxed at £18.12.0.
Robert YOUNG, Jur.’s estate was £385.0.0, taxed at £3.19.1-1/4.
¶The list of Taxables taken 23 August 1779 in the First District show John
CASHADY with no land, but 2 horses valued at £250, 5 cattle valued at £50,
and £3.1.0 ready money, no negroes. His valuation was £303.1.0. This was
the last time I found Robert Young, who was worth £5,642.18.0. The
designation “cattle” referred to oxen, “studs” to stallions “kept for
covering mares.”
¶By 1797, Robert CASSIDY appeared in Capt. Joseph Young’s district as one
white poll, with no blacks, no land, no studs. In November of 1798 in the
district of Joseph Young, J. P., John CASADAY and Robert CASHADAY both
appeared on a list of white poles.
¶In 1801 in Captain Henry Taylor’s Co, Jas. CASIDY was 1 white, no blacks, no
land; Robert CASIDY was one white, no blacks, 200 acres.2
¶ Although James CASSADY was there earlier, the first deed recorded in his
name was registered in 1809. Robert YOUNG, who had a son in law named Robert
CASHADY, registered his deed in 1784.
A William Young registered in 1783, John Young in 1784, Joseph in 1788, and a
Charles Young in 1790. There were others named Young.3
Joseph Young’s will, written 17__, proven April 1822, was witnessed (with
others) by Robert CASHEDY.4 Robert also witnessed (with an X) the will of
Will Watson on 09 March 1800, which left his daughter “100 Acres land
adjoining Robert Young.” The will of Adam Rader, written 04 Sept. 1807
mentions his daughter Elizabeth CASADY and grandson John Rader CASHEDY. It
was proven in the August Sessions of 1812. (Burgner, 12).
¶ Robert Young’s will mentions a bequest to his daughter Martha CASHADY, and
Robert Cashady is among the testators. [Many of Robert’s children named a
child Martha. Could she have been a first wife? When Robert first appears
in PA, it is as an absentee landlord, & in an early census the name is
spelled Cashady.]
¶ I could have saved myself trouble if I’d consulted a census I viewed in
1984 for US census of 1840.I must have been tired, because I wrote down the
wrong call #. I think it was TN, but the call # is MD. p 121 or 251 James
Casady 1 M 20-30, 1 Fem 20-30. Total 2 people, 1 eng in mfg.
