I started the process of looking for my Cassidy's with hardly any info; for a
while I wrote to two states for records and it took a long time. Recently, I
hired a specialist in geneology in Massachusetts and for a couple of hundred
dollars he moved my search quite far along;
I'm realizing now that I need to look for siblings(as they say, look
"horizontally" as well as "vertically") of my great-great grandfather
and
mother as well as much great-grandfather and great-grandmother;Also I am
hoping to find out if there are any cousins out there:
Here's what I've found thus far:
Early 1800's: Around Feb. 16, 1840, James Cassidy was born in Ireland possibly
in County Meath and his parents were Edward Cassidy and Catherine ??? Cassidy
; he came to the U.S. in 1855 arriving in Boston, Mass;he found his way
to western Mass.living in several towns(Savoy, Stockbridge) and worked as a
farmhand on the Pierce farm in Chesire when he was around 19(???1860 census);
he married Margaret Newman in 1864 (she had come over to the U.S. in
1852 at age 5;her parents were Michael and Ann; had a brother James) she died
in 1913 in Holyoke ); they got married in Adams Mass in 1864; By 1870, they
are living in Dalton, Mass. and between 1865 and 1885,they had the following
children:
Elizabeth b. 1865 d. 1939
Edward b. 1867 d. ???(maybe between 1924-37)
George Bernard b. 1868 d. 1952
Mary Rose b. 1870 d. 1940
James Thomas(my grandfather) b. 1872 d. 1924
Susan Clare b. 1874 d. 1939
Robert T. b. 1876 d. 1910???
Phillip Harry/Henry b.1878 1900 marr.Mary Josephine O'Brien d.??(1924-1937)
Charles F. b. 1882 d. 1937
Jane(Jennie?) b/ 1883 ?1921 marr.John Leahy d. 1957
Margaret Mabel b. 1885 ?? marr. Mr. Casey d. between 1940-52
Many of them eventually worked in the paper mills in Holyoke, Mass. where the
family moved around 1885-88 though Edward and James(in Ohio) became insurance
agents,Susan a shop worker and later a teacher, Charles working in a printing
shop, and Jennie teaching in the Joseph Metcalf School. James went to New
York City and Phillip to Hoboken NJ and Edward
to somewhere in NY state around 1913; Margaret Mabel moved to Washington, D.
C. in the 1930's(??).
Phillip had four children; the information about them is listed below was
found in a will of George's in 1952:
James Cassidy Albany NY
Francis Cassidy Holyoke, Mass
Gertrude Glennon Dalton, Mass.
Mary C. Ashe Holyoke
also listed was my mother:
Margaret Stokes(b.1920 in Ohio) Front Royal, Va.
SO!!! Does this info mean anything to anybody? Did James and Margaret have
any siblings? A William Cassidy was listed in the census in Chesire or Dalton
around the same time as James lived there; maybe he was a relative who came
over to the U.S. with James? There also was a Jennie Elizabeth Cassidy who
married Leon Morey in 1919 in Holyoke though she was born in NYC in 1900; she
may have been James' daughter by his first wife(Beatrice Duffy)???
Thanks for reading and I'll look forward to your replies!
