I know in our Tennessee family we would never bend. And we took it the way
the Irish take it not the way proper English says should be

No, it doesn't make much sense to me either, although I have heard not so
long ago that it was reinterpreted after the English occupation and
oppression in Ireland. For some reason a lot of people seem to be hooked on
this translation though...I've had a couple of conversations about it with
clan members and they've not been at all receptive to the translation given
me by my mother, who majored in English, French and Latin in college and
taught all three. So I haven't argued with anybody about family lore for
years...not even with the one whose database showed a 120 year old
grandfather in the early 19th century and an 8 year old grandmother during
the same time.
The most straightforward translation of Frangas Non Flectes would be "Break,
Not Bend," although I believe I was also told a more literal translation
might be "Bend Not, Break." It's been many decades since I didscussed it
with my mother, she is almost 97 today.
But if you look at the Cassidy Coat of Arms and up at the crest, you will
see a lance, broken and crossed; in the old jousting days a broken lance-as
opposed to a bent one-was the sign of a great hit or contest. That is the
most obvious clue to the meaning of the motto.
Hence Frangas Non Flectes...Break, Not Bend. Also a rather better battle
cry than 'you may break me, but you shall not bend me,' which makes about as
much sense when charging into battle yelling 'we will serve you breakfast
with arrogance and disdain!'

Nobody said a motto on a crest was always a battle cry, I just used the
'battle cry' as an example that supports the more literal translation.
Since the coat of arms does traditionally belong to one person, perhaps the
one with the broken lance as his crest WAS a soldier though. If he had been
a doctor, maybe the crest would have been a mortar and pestle.
I don't know why a coat of arms usually belonging to one person makes the
matter of translating Latin nonsense...but like I said, when it has come up
before, some people have not been very receptive to any suggestion that 'you
may break me but I'll never bend' might not be exactly what the motto means.

My Cassidy comes into VA mostly and they had lots of children. I am working
on them one by one. I know one went north to the Canada area. Not in that
part of research a lot yet. Stay in touch.
I just had a break on my mothers Cassity line and My dads Gregory line.
They may be connected back several generations.
Trying to get each one right. They keep changing the spelling of the names
from one census to another. From birth spelling to a different one when
married and then the children all spell their names differently. This is
the hardest project I have ever worked on.

Sorry, yes it was Cassidy @rootsweb. I'll repeat it here.
Hi Jeannie, I saw your message and I, too am looking for a Casdidy
(Cassiday, Casitte, Casda, and numerous other various spellings. My 3rd
great grandfather was Pierre (Patrick) Casitte married DesAnges Boudreau.
They lived in Ontario Province and moved to Massena, NY where they were
living in 1830. They had 3 children, Pierre (Patrick( Marie DesAnges and
MArie Adelaide, who was my 2nd great grandmother. The marrieage could havee
taken place inQuebec, Ontario or even Massena, NY.
Could these be related to your Canadian Cassidy family?

Would it be possible to down load the photo to a file and send it to the
web site so we can all look at it. My Cassidy's were in Pennsylvania, Ohio
and Iowa. Then they scattered to all over the place. I am a decent of
John Cassidy, born 1801 in England. Cooper Cassidy was my GGGgrandfather.
Cooper was the 5th of 11 boys, all born in Pennsylvania, all moved to Lee
County Iowa in the 1850's. All moved in every direction after adulthood.
Any connection to any one would be nice.
Linda
I just sent it this morning.
