One of my indirect ancestors, Julianna Heldebrand (b: 1861), appears to have died with no
continuing direct line, so she is in need of being remembered thorough her Heldebrand and
Cassel families.
Julianna married Oliver Cassel abt. 1883 in Union County, Arkansas (later lived in
Ouachita Co AR). They had a daughter Mabel Viola Cassel b: 1884. About 1890, they joined a
wagon train making its way toward Montana, which had just become the 41st state. Mabel
later recounted how her family dropped out of the wagon train at Pueblo, Colorado with
only one cot & one skillet in the way of household belongings. They later went on to
Montana, then moved to Texas. Mabel never married, became a school teacher in Houston, TX,
died there in 1976 & is buried next to her mother Julianna at Forest Park Cemetery on
Lawndale Blvd.
Julianna was one of sixteen brothers and sisters. Her father was Daniel Jefferson
Heldebrand (my maternal great-grandfather). Mabel is said to have told that as a child at
her grandfather's home, if one child misbehaved, it was mandated that all the children
should be punished--either by whipping or by taking a dose of strong laxative! He was an
irascibile fellow. I have photos of Julianna, Mabel & Oliver Cassel, as well as Daniel
Jefferson Heldebrand. <dustyrds(a)airmail.net>
