Michael Cassell came to Wythe County Virginia in the latter half of
1700, according to Mrs. Audrey Kemper Spence of Wythesville, Va...
Michael had been born in 1772. His mother was a Miss Rick, and it is
said that he married a lady named Miss Simmerman. This Michael came from
Pennsylvania and was evidently a grandson of Hupert Cassell who came
over from Germany in 1715 or 20. He was most likely a son of Yelles
Cassell of Henry of Hupert. This Michael Cassell is buried in the Old
St. Johns Church about one mile north of Wytheville, VA near the center
of the graveyard. He is lying by the side of Wiliam Cassell who died in
1844
Another Michael Cassell moved to Wythe County Va at the close of the
Revolutionary War and it is said that he was present at the surrender of
Cornwallis. This Michael Cassell was born in 1763 or 64 and had three
brothers, Frederick, Jacob and Immanuel. His father was Jacob Cassel and
it is belived that this Michael was a first cousin to the other Michael
Cassell,in that his father,Jacob,and theother Michaels father, Hupert,
were brothers.
Michael Cassell, son of Jacob Cassell, settled in the western end of
Wythe County, about one mile north east of the Old Kimberlin Lutheran
Church, (organized 1797)..He married Mary or Katherine Dobler, daugher
of Jacob Dobler, about the year 1786. His children were Jacob,William,
John, Davis, Joseph, Mathias, Mary and Ann. Joseph Cassell married Mary
Foglesong, Dec. 23, 1823;children, Sophia (who maried Mr. Neff) ,
Michael and Margaret.
This Michael Cassell, son of Jacob, is the ancestor of the S. Sidney
Cassell on Black Lick, Wythe County, VA, also Rev. C. W. Cassell of
Luray , Va, pastor and historian and who is living at the present time
(sic) This is from data collected by Dr. William H. Cassell of
Wythesville, Va. who is a descendant of Michael Cassell who lived east
of Wythesville, VA. Dr Cassell has one of the oldest Cassell Bibles
with dates in it.
David Cassell lived near Bethel Church in the eastern portion of Wythe
Co. Va. Mrs. Johnson, deceased, said that Michael Cassell of East
Wytheville had three half brothers, John, David and Andy. Mrs. W.H.
Simmerman, deceased said that these families were related. He gave the
David Cassell line as follows. David Cassell born Jan 7, 1784, died
April 11, 1869. Married Catherine Keesling born April 15, 1795; died
July 29, 1865; daugher of Conrad and Rebecca Keesling.
Issue...
(1) David, moved to Carrol County, VA, married twice, issue.
(2) John married Mary F. Umberger, June 10 1858, aged 32 and 18 years,
both single, son of David and Catherine Cassell, daughter of Michael and
Nancy Umberger.
(3) William, married Sarah Kegley, Sept. 23, 1858, son of David and
Catherine Cassell, daugter of John and Catherine Kegley, aged 21 and 22
years, moved to Missouri, Issue.
(4) Thomas married Catherine Matilda Johnson, Feb. 10, 1853 resided on
Cripple Creek, Va. His son John owns and resides on the farm of the late
Joseph Cassell near Bethel Church.(sic) See Dates.
(5) Sophia m Joel Umberger, June 165, 1858. She was his second wife, He
was aged 43, she 39 yrs. He was a son of Sarah and Henry Umberger. No
issue
(6)Katherine A. born 1829, married William Kinzer of Carroll County, Va,
Aug. 21, 1851. Issue
(7) Rebecca, born June 16, 1817, married Aerhart Simmerman, son of
George, son of Arehart Simmerman, Issue, Susanna who married Wylie A. J.
Spence, Mar 3, 1859 and others.
(8) Elizabeth A. born Nov 21, 1831:died Feb 18, 1915 married Thomas
Ott of Carrol County, Va. May 5, 1857, son of Elizabeth and William
Ott. aged 22 and 25 yrs. She married (2) Aug 18, 1807 Calvin R.Shortt of
Chesterfield County, Va , son of Reuben Shortt, a widower, aged 67.
Bride was 36 daughter of David Cassell, Issue
(9) Rosanna married Andrew Felty, Oct. 1, 1857, 32 and 37 yrs old.

(10) Senah, married Stephen Umberger, went to Texas, issue
