It is possible that my gggrandmother's name, Eliza Cashin, was once spelled something
similar to Cassell or Castle. Her father, Michael, was first recorded as Michael Cashel in
military records (1798) but later the spelling changed to Cashin. On a census record his
name was spelled as Castel. Eliza, who was born c1818, gave her place of birth in the 1861
British census, but the writing by the enumerator was practically illegible. Phonetically
speaking, there is a possibility she might have come from Annaghananny in Tynan parish,
Armagh. Her husband James Hughes likely came from the same parish, possibly the town of
Middletown. I am tilting at windmills but would be interested in hearing from anyone with
the name Cassel, Castle, Cassells, Cashin, or anything similar who came from the parish of
Tynan. Eliza married James Hughes and settled in Stockport, England, but I cannot find a
marriage record. Possibly they were married in Co. Armagh, but I can find no marriage
record th!
ere either.
