I am currently searching for a complicated net
of families in the 18th century in Southwest Virginia, most especially
Washington Co. The
families involved are Cassel, Fleenor, Linder, Gobble, Foglesong. The
Cassels are Lutherans, so they probably do not have too much to do with
the Mennonite Cassels in Pennsylvania. Most especially, I am searching
for one Michael Cassel who is said to have been born on 14 January 1763
in Augusta, Washington Co., and who married Mary Ann Fleenor. Michael is
said to have been orphaned and raised by the Fleenors. Michael's
children were born from 1799 onward, but a family bible says that they
married only in 1831. So Mary Ann may have been the second wife. The
family later moved on to Illinois.
As to now, it is unknown who the original immigrant of this Cassel
family is, when they came, and also, whether they came to Virginia
directly or through Pennsylvania. There are at least two other Michaels
at the same time in the same area, one known as "Black Lick" Michael,
the other one as "West End" Cassel. The one here looked for sometimes is
named "Rich Valley" Cassel.
Thanks for any hint you might be able to give me ...
Sabine
