The families that trace back to Germany likely took their last name from the place Kassel
or Hesse-Kassel.
There is a separate family in Scotland, a sept of the Kennedy clan. They can be traced to
one Gilbert Kennedy who had atleast one illigitimate son, and because his family was Lords
of Cassilius, gave the child(ren?) the last name of Cassels.
In my family, my Father's grandfather was a Cassel of German descent. My
great-grandfather was Conrad John Cassel born in Wyoming County, New York.
On my Mother's side, it is spelled Cassell, and they are Scottish from Fife.
