My Ministry Section from Calvin Castle
Added by judynativetexan on 22 May 2008
This is another section from Reminiscences of an old Confederate
Calvin Castle was an ordained minister for 41 years. Preached in in home town, which was
Gadsden, Alabama and adjoining counties for about 10 years. 31 years, after the death of
my second wife, I took up work in the North Georgia mountains. He preached there for
almost 2 years. There were 270 members when he left the church there.
Yellow Fever broke out in Gadsken, Alabama while he was in the mountains. He had two
little children at this time. One was living with his brother and one was living with his
sister. The little girl was 4 years old. The 4 year old girl was stolen by a women, who
wrote Calvin a letter and said that his brother had died ( sick but not dead) and she was
taking care of the girl but did not sign her name. He went to Gadsden but they knew
nothing of the child. Calvin said," I then commenced to travel in search of her and
wandered out to Texas." He married and had 2 children. By way of a letter, he found
that the girl was in Birmingham, Al. Clare was found in the Mercery Home when she was
rescued from an ill famed woman. She was arrested and tried before the court and sent to
the penitentiary for 4 years. Calvin said," I got my child and came back to Texas and
have lived here every since and sill in the ministry. "
The rest of the book is small sermons that are perfect for todays family and home. The
book ends with a letter from J.R. Acuff talking about their friendship and old times.
JR Acuff said, " I only remember that soft low voice that steady nerve and the cold
sparkling black eyes."
The book also talks about his thick long curls.
