1880 Census Mystery
I am wondering if you have any ideas to help me solve a mystery. I have
been trying to find my Iowa ancestors in the 1880 census. I have found all
of them except that I cannot find any from the Jacobson and Cassel branches.
My great-grandfather Axel Jacobson married my great-grandmother Carrie
Cassel on 6 Jan 1775. I have an article in Swedish about their Golden
Wedding Anniversary on my website at
http://www.samsloan.com/golden-w.htm . Unfortunately, it is in Swedish
which I cannot read so I do not know exactly where they were married except
that they were married in Iowa.
They had three children, Peter Wesley born 1877, Elmer born 1879 and
Henrietta born 1884. Wesley was born in Four Corners, Jefferson County,
Iowa. I do not know where Elmer and Henrietta were born.
The point is that Wesley and Elmer and their parents should appear on the
1880 census. The barn house at the Jacobson Family Farm which was two miles
south and one mile east of Orient had a sign "1880" on it. I believe that
Axel Jacobson built that barn but I am not sure. I know that the farm
stayed in family hands for almost exactly 100 years and it was sold in the
1970s, so the 1880 census should show them in Orient, Adair County, Iowa.
It might also show them in Creston, Union County, Iowa, where Axel Jacobson
owned houses or it might show them in Jefferson County, Iowa where my
grandfather was born. I have searched all of those places and cannot find
them anywhere.
I have checked the entire state of Iowa and there is no trace of any of
them. I also cannot find any of the brothers and sisters of Carrie Cassel.
She had eight brothers and sisters and all or most of them came to Iowa, so
they should be in the 1880 census.
I have been able to find some persons named Cassel in Madrid, Boone County,
Iowa. I have found Charles J. Cassel born 1822 with a wife Wila and
children named Joanna, Peter, Mary, Amanda and Charles. I am certain that
these are relatives of Carrie Cassel but not close relatives and I do not
know what the relationship is.
Wesley Jacobson was my grandfather. He married Mary Elixabeth Graham,
daughter of Samuel Graham and Elizabeth Grace Thomson. I have found Mary
Graham on the 1880 census for Iowa plus her parents, grandparents, uncles
and cousins. I found all of them that were alive in 1880. In some cases I
had to search in many different ways, but eventually I found them all.
Is it possible that they used a different name. I have searched under the
names Jacobzon and Castile for example. Can anybody tell me if they were in
fact living on the family farm in near Orient, Iowa in 1880? Is there any
way to check the actual census records for that plot of land to find them
that way?
I have found a C. Jacobson age 45 and an O. Jacobson age 35 working as
farmhands in Orient, Adair County, Iowa in the 1880 census. They were
working for J. P. Stephenson and J. B. Hagan. Family History Library Film
1254325 . These are not the people I am looking for, although they might be
relatives.
I have the family history of Axel Jacobson and Carrie Cassel on my website at

Any help on this matter would be appreciated.
