We are probably from the same Cassel/Kassel family: I know my Cassels go back to
Yillis Cassel, Mennonite preacher born circa 1590-1610 in Kreisheim. His descendents came
to Germantown, PA in the 1685 and again several dates before 1730, some from Kreisheim and
Krefeld.

Based on the dates and place descriptions I don't think your Cassels are part of my
database. I do have some suggestions about where they may be from.
Looking at how the place was described in the census in different years I think they were
all from the area West of the Rhine, North of the present border between France and
Germany, South of the City of Worms and within about 50 miles of the Rhine. This area was
part of France in 1811. It was annexed following the French Revolution. Following the
defeat of Napolean it was given to the Kingdom of Bavaria. Up until the 1870's there
was no nation called Germany. However people who spoke German and were from the various
States that had made up the Holy Roman Empire were begining to think of themselves as
being Germans. The designation of German or Germany as nationality or place of origin
does apear in census records either because of how the person being interviewed or the
census taker felt about this. The place that I have described above was from 1812 until
German Unification known as the Bavarian Rhineland or in German Rheinbayern. It was a
province of the Kingdom of !
Bavaria. This kingdom later joined the German Empire which lasted until the end of World
War I. If you are searching for ancestors on this branch on the Family History Web Site I
would search under German/Bavaria focus on entries that say Rheinbayern or Bavarian
Rhineland.
