Jeff,
Jacob Castle was my grandfather, six times removed, and he is the only decendent of Julius
which I have records of which came to VA. He initially settled in the New River Area and
was a land holder there. He was a long hunter and was one of the first frontiersmen to SW
VA. His venture was against the orders of the Governor and violated the treaty he had
made with the Indians. Jacob is rumored to have purchased around 200 acres from the
Indians for a butcher knife and a musket, and upon this land he established a trading post
which came to be known as Castles Woods, currently Castlewood, VA. I attend Castlewood HS
and am familiar with the area on which his trading post stood and the old town of
Castlewood which was built on a bluff across the river from the trading post sight. He
had several (in the teens) children by Sowege, his legal wife, and by family folklore had
other children by Indian maidens of which no records exist. His children were the first
frontirsmen in!
to KY, and at one time Jacob is listed by the Census of having been there himself. Jacob
was in close association with Dan'l boone and one Castle married into his family.
Jacob had ventured into Kentuck Co., as it was known at the time, prior to Boone, and it
is probable that Jacob showed Boone the Cumberland Gap, the gateway to KY from VA. Jacob
changed his name to Castle, rather than using the Cassel surname which his father, Peter,
used. It is rumored that he and Peter had a falling out, most likely because Jacob had
married Sowege of the Pawnee tribe of wester PA, and had not married in the family or
another german family. Records validate him being in the New River Area, now Wytheville,
VA.
and in the area in which he settled which is now Russell Co., VA. he was a bird! If you
wish more, email me at bwencas(a)gmail.com. By the way, do you have free Gmail by Google?
If not, and you desire an accout, I can invite you to join. It's better than Yahoo
and gives more capacity.
Blessings,
Bryce Castle
