OBITUARY FOR MRS. SARAH A. CASSEL FROM THE CRESTLINE, OHIO ADVOCATE,
JANUARY 12, 1905
Mrs. Sarah A. Cassel, wife of the late John Cassel, died at the
home of her daughter, Mrs. C. S. Altaffer, Tuesday evening, January 10,
at the age of 86 years and 3 days. Mrs. Cassel had been an invalid for
many years and her death was due mainly to the infirmities of old age.
Sarah Ann Stough was born near Shippensberg, PA., the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John Stough. Early in life she came with her parents to
Richland County, Ohio and located at New Castle, near Ontario. While
living here, on Feb. 25, 1836, she was married to John Cassel, who was
then learning the carpenter trade. In 1843 they moved to the farm now
occupied by W. A. Cassel. They lived here for a year, then went back to
New Castle for a year and returned to the farm where they lived the
balance of their lives and reared their family. John Cassel died in
April, 1902, and after that time the deceased lady made her home with
Mrs. Altaffer.
Mrs. Cassel was the mother of eleven children, eight of whom
survive her. They are Mary Ann Taylor of Ames, Iowa; George F. Cassel,
east of Crestline; D. H. Cassel, the hardware merchant of Crestline;
Mrs. S. W. Brandt, of Richland County; Mrs. C. S. Altaffer, of
Crestline; I. J. Cassel, of Richland County; Frank Cassel, the Big Four
Baggageman, of Crestline; W. A. Cassel, east of Crestline.
The funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at one
o'clock from the residence of Mrs. Altaffer, Rev. R. A. Halverstadt, of
the English Lutheran church officiating.
Mrs. Cassel was always an excellent Christian lady. Devoted to her
family and whatever was good. Though she suffered considerable in her
later years she bore it all with Christian fortitude and a patience that
was sublime.
