You may have this information by now, but in case you don't -- here's what I
have.
Lloyd was also my ggg grandfather. According to my gfather he was known as Calvin. Like
you said her was a riverboat captain on the Arkansas River. He was killed as a result of
a drunken crewmember biting him. The bite got infected and he died from it. I've
been told that he's buried around Sparta (I think that's the name), which is
around Clarksville, AR.
After his death, Ruth could not support the family so Henry and Calvin lived with a
blacksmith and Rosa was sent to another family. Ruth remarried later (her last name
became Henderson) and she and the boys moved to Oklahoma.
My grandfather also stated that Loyd moved to Arkansas from Tennessee. I've found
census records indicating that Loyd and his brother JC were living in Washington,
Louisiana in 1850, when they were both young boys (ages 7 and 11). They were living with
a man with the last name of Israel Pierce and several other older men by the name of
either Petery or Peters (the census records are hard to read). Washington was a big
riverboat town at that time, so it makes sense that this is the same Loyd -- the age is
right as well.
I can only find Calvin on the 1860 census. I'm not sure whether this Calvin is Loyd
or JC, but it appears to be one of the two brothers that are listed on the 1850 census.
Calvin is still living with this same Israel Pierce and his wife Jane. The age is more
right for this to have been JC.
On the 1870 census, Loyd is in Van Burean, AR and is married to Ruth and has two sons --
Henry and Calvin. It shows his occupation as steamboatsman. His name is shown as L.A.
I'm wondering though, if this should have been L.C. -- perhaps the name was given to
the census taker as Loyd Calvin and he understoon Alvin? I found JC on the 1870 census,
as well. He was living in Memphis, TN and was also listed as a steamboatsman -- so the
story about him moving to Ark from Tenn makes sense since his brother was in TN at this
time.
I don't have the date of his death, but I'm guessing it was between 1870 and 1880,
since I found Ruth and the boys on the 1880 census, but not Loyd.
If you have any more information, please send it to me. I'm trying to find out who
Loyd's parents were.
