Thanks for that info, Bette. I had already seen that 1870 census, but somehow I don't
believe she is the same Sarah.
She would have had living relatives then. The "rumor" in my family is that she
was killed in the war. This makes more sense - but it too is unproven. Many civilians
died in the war and were buried in mass graves or burned.
In any case, I've always felt there's no proof either way. I can't imagine
her living in a poor house instead of with relatives - unless they were also too poor to
take her in.
And what happened to the daughters and son? The son, Adam, may have been found on an
Oregon census, but I could never verify it was the same Adam - since it's not an
uncommon name and I've seen "Cassady" spelled several ways on census
records.
