Hi Jon:
Tnx for the response.
I have been mostly going through primary records in Howard County MO relating to the
various Cason families so haven't looked at any primary records/transcripts from
Virginia yet.
Howard County probate court records in particular contain some very good info about
Fendall's brothers, John M and George jr. Both John M & George jr had several
descendants. There is also a wealth of info in the probate records about their uncle
George Cason (a brother of Reuben, died abt Dec 1845) and his family. I'll send you
some court transcripts when I get them done and proofed.
One bit of info I have seen in various websites relating to Fendall is a reference to an R
James Cason who was also an 1843 emigrant to Oregon (eg Stephenie Flora's site at
www.oregonpioneers.com). I am especially intrigued by info that this R James Cason joined
the Oregon militia around 1844. I am wondering if you have any more info on him?
The reason I ask is that John M Cason's eldest son is Reuben James Cason. This R James
Cason left quite a record as a civil war soldier in the confederate army. He carried out
various guerrilla raids in Howard Co MO, eventually joined the regular CSA and was drowned
in the sinking of the Kentucky at the end of the civil war. My thoughts reading these
military records is that here is a guy who seems to have considerable military expertise
for just a farmer from Howard County MO.
Another snippet of info I have is an older letter from my own family attic which has this
statement: James Cason was also tall, had coal black hair and eyes and was in some Indian
wars. The Indians called him 'Keen Eye'. I haven't been able to tie the son of
John M to any such activities in Missouri but I am wondering if maybe the location of the
'Indian Wars' is actually Oregon.
I haven't been able to find Reuben James in the 1850 US federal census in Missouri but
he did marry Mildred Melvina Cropp in 1852 in Howard County. Which leads me to wonder
where this son of John M Cason was before 1852.
Finally, I also have been researching the John Lewis Cason who married Bette Belle Crigler
in Howard County MO on 29 December 1875. I have seen family trees on the web that indicate
this John Lewis Cason is a son of Fendall. However, my research indicates that the husband
of Ms Crigler is actually the eldest son of Andrew Jackson Cason and a grandson of John M
Cason. What is your thinking about who married Ms Crigler in 1875?
Cheers,
Tracy
