<And, as Rob Beatty said, 'May our list eventually account for every single
Cason!'>
Hello CASON researchers:
My quest is a little bit different. Am hunting the ancestory and family of
Daniel CASON born a slave in KY in 1845. In later years he worked for my
great grandpa in KS. I have a photo I am trying to identify which I think
is Daniel at our farm.
He is one of the Black Civil War soldiers to be honored on the new Black
Civil Ware Memorial in Washington DC.
Here is a tiny outline of Daniel Cason, of Kentucky:
This information from Civil War, newspaper, obit, cemetery
records, and personal records of my family.
Daniel : "I was borned a slave in 1845 day and month
unknown. Christian county KY". He was also in Todd
county KY. He stated in record: "lived in Christian county
until 1869; Todd county until 1886 and Harvey county until
present time"
. Now this should read 1883 not 1886. As I found him in
Grandpa employment before 1886.
Died December 19 1911.
Burial Greenwood cem.Newton KS. Block 9 Lot 2. space1.
Has a Civil War government stone.
First wife (Slave?) was Mary CASON who died 25 Jan 1921 in Madisonville KY.
She drew a small widows pension. ALSO Rhoda Jane Vetress whom he married 16
Oct 1889 in Kansas drew a widows pension. (she died 1945)
Mary listed as a "May widow".
Rhoda went by Jane.
Affidavit of friends list:
John Jackson: "I have know Daniel for 40 years.
C.W.Dickinson "I have know Daniel for over 50 years.
Rev W.H. Garnett whom performed the wedding of Rhoda and Daniel
Doctor John Grove attending physician
Survivors listed in his obituary:
wife Rhoda, three children: Mrs A.L. FORD; Thomas Cason
of Aurora Ill.; Miss Amanda Cason in Madisonville KY. He
also has a brother, Morris Cason in Penbrook KY. Funeral
held in First Colored Baptist Church Dec 21th 1911. Rhoda
must have remarried,as her stone reads Rhoda CASON JONES. 1869-1945.
Daniel came to Kansas in 1883, probably with the 26 brave
souls from Elgin,KY who migrated to the Walton and Newton,
Harvey county Kansas area. Daniel is on the 1885 census in
Richland township, with my grandfather Wm Smith. He is an
employee of Grandpa Smith. His jobs were to help in the house,
watch tiny Bennie and help in the fields when there was someone
else to watch Bennie. It is told he saved my grandfathers life four
times. We have the stories of three of those times.
Daniel served in the Company K of the 101th Reg colored
Infantry. Enlisted 24 Oct 1864, at Clarksville KY. Honorable discharged
from Nashville TN 21 Jan 1866..
He wrote in pension records. "I am the applicant in the
aforesaid case. That I was born a slave and was held in bondage
until Jan 1st 1863. There fore I have no certain record of the day or
month of my birth in the year 1845."
He was educated and wrote letters to my
grandpa Bennie, until his death. Bennie would visit him often and
he came to the farm often to visit my grandparents. I believe I
have a photo of him at the farm.
He later worked 12 years as a janitor in the Harvey county
Ks courthouse, Newton, Ks. He and wife Rhoda lived in
Newton. His obituary states he was a member of the First
Baptist Church Colored, Newton Ks. He suffered from
pneumonia and died on duty at the courthouse. He refused
not to go to work even though he was very sick, and Rhoda
had tried to keep him home and doctor him.
I found some files at the courthouse on his employment:
Daniel Cason Salary for Janitor for 4 quarters $90.00 1901.
Daniel Cason reappointed janitor 1902
These records continue until his death in 1911.
Anyone with information on this family please let me know.
