I was fascinated to see that what is one of the many Harrington branch-names
in the Beara Peninsula, Co. Cork (south-west), Ireland, is used as a surname
in the States. Many Harrington(Caskey) people from here emigrated to the
U..S. in years gone by. Several hundred Harrington(Caskey) descendants must
still be living there.
One time I received an ancestral query from a man in Montana with the
surname Combo. I said to myself that he surely must have been descended from
one of circa 80 different branch-names attached to the surname
Sullivan/O'Sullivan in the Beara Peninsula from which there was vast
emigration, especially to the States ---- and, sure enough, I eventually
tracked down the "Combo" ancestors to O'Sullivans who had emigrated as
copper miners to Butte, Montana, from Allihies (Copper Mines) Parish in the
Beara Peninsula ---- and they later used the branch-name as a real surname,
because of the fact that so many O'Sullivans from here were out in Butte,
and they has to differentiate one from the other. This particular O'Sullivan
branch-name in Beara would be recorded as Cumba, Comeboy, Cumbaw, etc.
Likewise the Harrington branch-name Caskey would also have been put down in
parish records as Causkey and Caski.
