I was stumped on this line for years until today I found some things linking your Andrew
to my line.
I do not have definitive proof, however I have some circumstantial evidence that points to
Andrew Caskey being the son of my 5great grandparents, Johann Caskey/Casky/Kaskey and hsi
wife Maria "Polly" Sweigart. They were originally of Ephrata, Lancaster, PA,
where the older children were baptized in Bergstrasse Lutheran Church. Johann/John and
Maria had three children whose baptism records state they were bapt. at Bergstrasse: Levi
(my line) in 1815, Harriet in 1817, Johann in 1820. A fourth child, Diannah Fiannah
Caskey was b. 1821 and is buried with her husband Heinrich/Henry Showalter in the cemetery
at Bergstrasse Lutheran.
My grandmother kept telling me that Caskey is an Irish name, however the name
"Johann" and the fact that they were Lutherans kept me believing they were
German.
I also knew that there were more children to John and Maria that just the four before
mentioned. Here they are in 1830:
1830 Canton, Ohio
John Casky, 1 male 30-40
2 males under 5; (Who??? Curtis and/or Andrew??)
2 males 5-10; (John was about 10; who else?)
1 male 10-15, (Levi was about 15)
1 female 10-15, (Harriet was about 13)
1 female 20-30 (2nd wife Sarah)
Here they are in 1820 also in case you're interested:
1820 Cocalico Tp, Lancaster, PA. Series M33, roll 106, p16
John Kaskey 202010-10011-000-2
two males and one female under 10 (John, Levi, Harriet)
two males 16-18
a male and female 26-45
a female 45
two people engaged in manufacture
Anyway, Andrew seems to be the last child born to Maria before her death. The Canton
Repository had a death notice for her on 19 Sep 1828: "Died....On the 14th Mrs. Maria
Caskey, wife of Mr. John Caskey of this town, aged 39" I saw online that Andrew was
born in 1828 and got excited... everything was starting to fall in place. If he was born
right around the time Maria passed away, it would seem that he was her son, and that she
died from complications of child birth. Sure enough, on
findagrave.com, I saw that he was
born eight days before she passed away.
I also found this in the book "The house of Waltman and its allied families" by
Lora S. La Mance, p. 227
"Catherine Lytle married Andrew Caskey, who descended from _______ Kaskey who came to
Pennsylvania from Bavaria before 1750.
--Charles Caskey, Sharon Center, O
--Silas Caskey, Sharon Center, O."
This also got me excited because it uses a "K" as the first letter of the
surname rather than a "C" and states he was in fact German!
I also believe that Curtis Caskey might be a son of Maria and John Caskey. Curtis had six
children that I know of, and three of them repeat names of Curtis's would-be siblings:
John, Levi, and Harriett.
I hope to find more information on the subject, however I only seem to have a break
through every decade or so, so it might be 2020 before I unearth anything else new :)
