My name is Evelyn (Smart) Heidbrink. My father, Bruce W. Smart was married at one time to
a Dorothy Jane Southern. They were married 26 April 1946 in Monticello, Drew, Arkansas.
In October 1949 Dorothy left Colorado and went back to Arkansas. In Arpil 1950 Bruce
filed for divorce and said divorce was finalized in October 1950. Bruce found out from a
couple of old school friends shortly thereafter that Dorothy had been pregnant and had had
a baby girl. Dorothy had been sent from Arkansas to Ft. Knox, Kentucky to live with her
sister, Mavis. When Bruce tried to get information on Dorothy and/or the baby his
ex-mother-in-law called and told him that the baby had died. It wasn't until later
that Dorothy had written a couple of letters to Bruce that he found out that both mother
and daughter were doing fine.
I have been trying for years to locate my "long lost" sister. Bruce has made a
couple of trips back to the old stomping grounds but to no avail. Any help in locating
this daughter would be greatly appreciated.
What information I have been able to put together in the past 30+ years is so "swiss
cheesed" I have not been able to get too far. I don't know if Dorothy went by
Southern or Smart when she had the baby. Have no idea of the name of the baby. I know
that Mavis had been married, divorced and remarried to a man in the service and stationed
at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Do not have a positive affirmation on either of the two married
names for Mavis. I have been told that Dorothy later went back to Arkansas and got
remarried.
The line of Southern’s that I have are:
Houston Butler Southern & Mavis Pearl Caskey
Dorothy Jane Southern
Mavis Southern
H. B. Southern Jr.
Malvin Southern
Paul Southern
Siblings not necessarily in the correct order.
Again, thank you for any and all help, information and/or contacts.
